Originally called "Bands With No Fans Records" (and if you're in a Houston band, I'm sure you can appreciate how appropriate the name is ), this one's run by folks from a couple different local bands (O'Doyle Rules and Inbred Whiteboy, for two). At any rate, they've put out some cool stuff in the relatively short time they've been around, mostly concentrating on the punk & ska side of the Houston music scene: an Animosity 7"; The Gops You're Next! CD; the debut CD by ska-punk guys O'Doyle Rules; and a cool-sounding comp of ska-/punk-type bands, including locals and bigger-name out-of-towners, called We Plead the Fifth. They also recently released local ska kids The Vent-o-lators 2nd CD, and I hear there's new stuff on the way from both O'Doyle Rules and Lacky, as well. This is all good stuff, and it's cheap as hell, seriously - go buy it, and put your money where your scene-supporting mouth is, eh? [7/5/99]
GRIMMLAKE RECORDS:
116 Stanford
Lake Jackson, TX. 77566
(409) 297-0758
(Take note, folks - Grimmlake's moved sometime recently from "Clute," wherever that is, to Lake Jackson...) I dunno much about Grimmlake, other than the info they give on the inside of the recent Cedar Of Lebanon/Sore Loser 7", about being "a cross between the brothers grimm and groom lake, a cross between fairy tales and disillusionment." (You got me, there.) Anyway, they've released the above 7", which is pretty cool, and I've heard they recently did an Objection 7" that's neato & stuff, too (apparently it's a joint effort w/Austin's Red Jag Wire Records). Beyond that, I dunno what they've got... [6/15/97]
This label's pretty big, in the scheme of local indies... Heart's been around since 1989, and has apparently made somewhat of a name for itself in the jazz music industry (infer from that that yes, they're a jazz label). They've put out stuff by Erich Avinger, Elias Haslinger, and Beth Ullman, among others...

Dunno a whole lot about this label, but it looks to be the label of rockabilly swingers Chadd Thomas and The Crazy Kings, 'cause it's the label their self-released tape/record's on... [3/26/98]

A pretty teeny-tiny label, this one is basically the personal label of local jazz guys The Bopmeisters, and I think they've only released one CD so far... [7/5/99]
Well, I know a bit more about these guys now; they're a re-release label, whose mission is to repress rare/unreleased punk rock in Texas (primarily from the Houston area).

Justice is Houston's biggest label, stuck somewhere between being major-label scum and helping local artists make it big. I'm told that their head guy, Randall Jamail(?), has somewhat of a bad reputation, so be warned. And by the way, most of Justice's Hellhole comp sucks - maybe it's the bands, maybe it's the production, or maybe, just maybe, it's my skewed tastes, but the only tunes on there that I really like are the tracks by Badger, The Jinkies and Blueprint.

This is basically Sad Pygmy's label, but they put out stuff by other folks, too, like Rotten Piece, Turmoil In The Toybox, Richard Ramirez, and Rotting Fish. Within the last few years they've released a 7-inch or two of Sad Pygmy's, a Bickley 7-in., a split-7" between the two bands, the truly odd Risk Is Just A Part Of The Game Houston compilation CD (with a cool cover by True Artist Tales guy Scott Gilbert), and at least one Sad Pygmy CD. -punk galore. (They've been pretty quiet for a while now, though - anybody know if they're still in existence?) [1/29/99]

Another band's little record label (I think there are roughly a dozen of them in Houston today - not that there's anything wrong with that, hey...), this one's the label of Woodlands kids Daddy Warbucks, and the only thing they've got released so far (that I know of) is their debut album, Album #1... This record label's run by Nick Cooper (formerly of Sprawl, now of the Free Radicals), and most of the stuff they seem to have available -- on CD-R if it's out-of-print, which is nice -- is from the old Sprawl days: The King of Parking, The Deflorist, The Man With The Yellow Hat, Heat Miser/Seaweed/Ska Mitzvah, all that, along with The Texas Funk Compilation, an AXIOM comp, and an old Presidents' 12". He's also put out some newer stuff, like a Necessary Tension CD and the Free Radicals' The Rising Tide Sinks All (which is really, really cool), so hopefully there'll be more on the way. [7/7/2000]

A fairly new label, Release seems mostly focused on the electronic side of the Houston scene, which is nice. The only thing out so far is a 12" by Liquid 22, but there's an EP on the way, as well as stuff by an up-and-coming producer, DJ Archaic. And hey, they're apparently sponsoring something called the Texas Electronic Festival, off in October... [7/7/2000]

Well, these guys are technically an Austin label, but they swear to me that they're Houston kids at heart, so hey. Anyway, the one thing they've got out so far that I know about is the cool First Crush comp (a split deal with Streetcar Music International; see above), but they've got quite a bit on the way... I'm told they'll be releasing a new Stalag Seventeen 7" sometime in the near future, and maybe an LP after that; they've also got a split-7" with The Get Up Kids and The Gloria Record (which features former members of Austin's Mineral), and that sounds pretty neato, too... Probably one of the "biggest" indies in town, these folks cover a lot of the local industrial/dance-type stuff here in town, from shows to putting out records. I know Bamboo Crisis, Processor, Flowers & Machines, Bozo Porno Circus, Violent Blue, and Pinque are all on the label, and maybe some more besides. Cool folks, even if I'm not really into that kinda music, and they've got a very well-designed Web site (sorry, that's just the former Web developer in me talking). I sincerely hope they keep up the label, 'cause they seem to just get better & better. [1/15/99]
TWIST LIKE THIS RECORDS:
P.O. Box 540995
Houston, TX. 77254
Not the same as Austin's Twistworthy Records, this one was actually a cool little label run by Matt Murillo of Junior Varsity. Unfortunately, the label closed down recently, and although it wasn't around real long, Matt managed to release some cool stuff, including a Maow 7" (featuring Kim from J.V.'s sister - from Canada, eh?), the 1.4.5's Almost Good 7", J.V.'s own recent 7", Pep Rally Rock (which, incidentally, features some totally beautiful retro-style packaging, seriously; it looks like it dropped through a timewarp from 1952 and, well, it kicks ass), a live Kiss-Offs 7", and a 7" from Nagoya, Japan's own Panther (who played with J.V. a while back). Buy this stuff, eh? Maybe if everybody does, he'll start it back up again (I heard something about that recently, actually)... [3/31/99]

Wholly Other's a cool little label run by Tom & Christina Carter of Charalambides (hence the e-mail address above); they release a lot of the more "experimental" stuff that can be found here in town, like stuff by themselves, Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast (a joint effort with Fleece Records; see above), and Artificial Subterrane. I will admit that a lot of what they put out isn't exactly my thing (I'm a pop addict, what can I say?), but it is worth listening to, believe me. [8/12/97]
