As I've said before, I'm far from an authority on what's what in the music scene here in town; the below could all be bullshit, for all I know. So if you've got any info that's not on here, please just drop me a line at "gaijin" at "spacecityrock.com", and I'll attempt to add it as soon as I can. (Please take a look through the rules, though, if you haven't before...) God damn, this town has a ton of record labels; I sometimes wonder why they don't consolidate & pool their resources to do more stuff, but hey, that's just me - I guess that's why the split-7" is so popular around here... Under the name Music For Apartments Records, the collective offers music from a wide range of genres. A lot of the niche mentality of the past has been dissolved by the immense amount of culture that diffuses daily accross the internets. This medium has empowered many to be able to create, and to share their work with a vast multicultural audience. By combining the forces of their individual members, the ARMFAR collective is able to offer material that is above the par in terms of creativity and value.

Under the name ARM, the collective offers a wide variety of multimedia, from website and interactive presentations, to promotional advertisements and identity development for artists and companies. Our creative team is at the forefront of the fast growing field of interactive and motion design. The collective has multiskilled artists with many years of experience and award winning designs. Our main service is the development of promotional services for musicians and artists. We are inclined to this medium because it allows for maximum creative freedom. The expressive nature of music fuels the creativity of the artists, which reflects and enhances the music. [6/25/2006]

BINARY HATE:

A cool new local label, Binary Hate's actually not focused strictly on local stuff, which is sorta unusual for around here. In fact, the only locals they've released stuff by so far is ex-Sore Loser people The John Sparrow (BH put out their self-titled EP); label head Brent told me he'd rather focus on people who're more 'national' in scope, which is cool... Anyway, they've got stuff out right now by The John Sparrow and Austin's The Impossibles (their Return CD), and a split-7" with Hunter-Gatherer and Mock Orange, with a new CD on the way from thisyearsmodel and a 12" remix series called "Break Beats, Not Bones." Sounds good to me... [9/25/2000]

BRONZE BEAGLE RECORDS:

Man, these labels are popping up left'n right - I can barely keep up! sigh... At any rate, this label was apparently started by Sperlings' guitarist/singer Carl Sandin (formerly of the Walk-Ins), and they've released a surprising number of things, including Carl's 2 solo albums, the Walk-Ins' Got Dumb If You Want It, and both of the Sperlings' CDs so far (the new one of which, Sea of Sarcasm, I'm pretty curious to hear...). Stuff in the works up at Bronze Beagle Studio One (the label seems to be mostly just stuff recorded at BBSO) includes the Orphans' followup album and a band called Gasoline Alley that features another former Walk-In. Could be cool... [7/13/98]

Compadre's one of the bigger-profile labels in town these days, with well-known country/roots music folks like Billy Joe Shaver, Hayes Carll, and Townes Van Zandt on the roster. It used to be out on its own, but these days it's reportedly owned by Music World Entertainment, the entertainment monolith run by Mathew Knowles (yep, that "Knowles"). Thanks to Chris K. for the info... [10/10/2007]

Don't know a whole lot about this label, except that it was started by now-big-time local rapper Carlos Coy, aka South Park Mexican, and is turning rapidly into one of the biggest hip-hop labels in town. I think they've already got quite a few other people on the roster, like Hillwood Hustlaz, Pimpstress, Low G., Grimm, & Rasheed, but I don't know much about any of 'em, I'm afraid... [9/25/2000]

Well, idiot that I am, I hadn't actually thought these guys were local. At any rate, it appears that they are, so here you go. Dunno much about 'em, except that the Worship Guitars people distribute their stuff (see below), and that Death Valley's incredible Que Pasta! Their first release was a CD by local hardcore guys Injury, Thrown Away, and then they released a Latchkey Kids 7", Punk Rock Does The Body Good, but beyond that, hell, I dunno. These guys've released some really cool stuff in recent memory, including the debut CD by Lozenge, Plenum, several Buddha on the Moon 7-inch efforts, and a rockin' album by now-defunct scientist-rockers Dyn@mutt. More recently, they've put out a 10" EP by ESP Summer (formed by Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive and Ian whatshisname of the Pale Saints), and they've also released both a Spoonfed Hybrid CD EP and a Buddha on the Moon CD (which is a split w/some other label I dunno) real recently. Check out their web site for the full catalog, and buy lots of what they've got, 'cause it's all cool. And besides, Larry and H.K. are cool guys. [6/15/97]

Since the seeming demise of folks like Sound Virus and Lazy Squid, Fleece is actually one of the few record label bastions of experimental music left in this town (at least, as far as I can tell, and I'm no expert). By "experimental," I generally mean that the bands they release play music that, well, isn't for everybody - but hey, if you're adventurous... Anyway, it's run by Kurt, the "experimental music god" down at SoundEx (who, by the way, is a cool guy). He hasn't been going long, but he's already racked up an impressive number of releases - CDs by local heroes Rusted Shut and Kable (including a new one), a jointly-released (Wholly Other) album by the coolly-named Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast, a comp of some of the noisier local bands (Dry Nod, Dave Dove Paul Duo, etc.), a benefit CD for Ptolemaic Terrascope, an odd little British magazine (this one's a joint release w/Worship Guitars, too), and Thaumaticron, the latest CD by the ex-The Mike Gunn member known as Dunlavy (and his first U.S. release). phew...

Plus, he's got lots of other stuff in the works, like new albums from improvisational guitar player Philip Gayle, Rotten Piece, Klak (space-drone stuff), Dry Nod, Dunlavy, and Rusted Shut, a reissue of the classic Culturcide album, Year One, and a non-Houston release, an LP from King Frog (one-half of Noggin, from Portland). To be honest, I can't say most of this stuff is really my "thing," but my taste isn't the only one that matters, here - if you want noisy, strange, innovative music, this is the place. [12/26/98]

Originally called "Bands With No Fans Records" (and if you're in a Houston band, I'm sure you can appreciate how appropriate the name is ), this one's run by folks from a couple different local bands (O'Doyle Rules and Inbred Whiteboy, for two). At any rate, they've put out some cool stuff in the relatively short time they've been around, mostly concentrating on the punk & ska side of the Houston music scene: an Animosity 7"; The Gops You're Next! CD; the debut CD by ska-punk guys O'Doyle Rules; and a cool-sounding comp of ska-/punk-type bands, including locals and bigger-name out-of-towners, called We Plead the Fifth. They also recently released local ska kids The Vent-o-lators 2nd CD, and I hear there's new stuff on the way from both O'Doyle Rules and Lacky, as well. This is all good stuff, and it's cheap as hell, seriously - go buy it, and put your money where your scene-supporting mouth is, eh? [7/5/99]

GRIMMLAKE RECORDS:
116 Stanford
Lake Jackson, TX. 77566
(409) 297-0758

(Take note, folks - Grimmlake's moved sometime recently from "Clute," wherever that is, to Lake Jackson...) I dunno much about Grimmlake, other than the info they give on the inside of the recent Cedar Of Lebanon/Sore Loser 7", about being "a cross between the brothers grimm and groom lake, a cross between fairy tales and disillusionment." (You got me, there.) Anyway, they've released the above 7", which is pretty cool, and I've heard they recently did an Objection 7" that's neato & stuff, too (apparently it's a joint effort w/Austin's Red Jag Wire Records). Beyond that, I dunno what they've got... [6/15/97]

This label's pretty big, in the scheme of local indies... Heart's been around since 1989, and has apparently made somewhat of a name for itself in the jazz music industry (infer from that that yes, they're a jazz label). They've put out stuff by Erich Avinger, Elias Haslinger, and Beth Ullman, among others...

Justice is Houston's biggest label, stuck somewhere between being major-label scum and helping local artists make it big. I'm told that their head guy, Randall Jamail(?), has somewhat of a bad reputation, so be warned. And by the way, most of Justice's Hellhole comp sucks - maybe it's the bands, maybe it's the production, or maybe, just maybe, it's my skewed tastes, but the only tunes on there that I really like are the tracks by Badger, The Jinkies and Blueprint.

This is basically Sad Pygmy's label, but they put out stuff by other folks, too, like Rotten Piece, Turmoil In The Toybox, Richard Ramirez, and Rotting Fish. Within the last few years they've released a 7-inch or two of Sad Pygmy's, a Bickley 7-in., a split-7" between the two bands, the truly odd Risk Is Just A Part Of The Game Houston compilation CD (with a cool cover by True Artist Tales guy Scott Gilbert), and at least one Sad Pygmy CD. -punk galore. This record label's run by Nick Cooper (formerly of Sprawl, now of the Free Radicals), and most of the stuff they seem to have available -- on CD-R if it's out-of-print, which is nice -- is from the old Sprawl days: The King of Parking, The Deflorist, The Man With The Yellow Hat, Heat Miser/Seaweed/Ska Mitzvah, all that, along with The Texas Funk Compilation, an AXIOM comp, and an old Presidents' 12". He's also put out some newer stuff, like a Necessary Tension CD and the Free Radicals' The Rising Tide Sinks All (which is really, really cool), so hopefully there'll be more on the way. [7/7/2000]

Anyway, the one thing they've got out so far that I know about is the cool First Crush comp (a split deal with Streetcar Music International; see above), but they've got quite a bit on the way... I'm told they'll be releasing a new Stalag Seventeen 7" sometime in the near future, and maybe an LP after that; they've also got a split-7" with The Get Up Kids and The Gloria Record (which features former members of Austin's Mineral), and that sounds pretty neato, too... Probably one of the "biggest" indies in town, these folks cover a lot of the local industrial/dance-type stuff here in town, from shows to putting out records. I know Bamboo Crisis, Processor, Flowers & Machines, Bozo Porno Circus, Violent Blue, and Pinque are all on the label, and maybe some more besides. Cool folks, even if I'm not really into that kinda music, and they've got a very well-designed Web site (sorry, that's just the former Web developer in me talking). I sincerely hope they keep up the label, 'cause they seem to just get better & better. [1/15/99]

TWIST LIKE THIS RECORDS:
P.O. Box 540995

Not the same as Austin's Twistworthy Records, this one was actually a cool little label run by Matt Murillo of Junior Varsity. Unfortunately, the label closed down recently, and although it wasn't around real long, Matt managed to release some cool stuff, including a Maow 7" (featuring Kim from J.V.'s sister - from Canada, eh?), the 1.4.5's Almost Good 7", J.V.'s own recent 7", Pep Rally Rock (which, incidentally, features some totally beautiful retro-style packaging, seriously; it looks like it dropped through a timewarp from 1952 and, well, it kicks ass), a live Kiss-Offs 7", and a 7" from Nagoya, Japan's own Panther (who played with J.V. a while back). Buy this stuff, eh? Maybe if everybody does, he'll start it back up again (I heard something about that recently, actually)... [3/31/99]

Wholly Other's a cool little label run by Tom & Christina Carter of Charalambides (hence the e-mail address above); they release a lot of the more "experimental" stuff that can be found here in town, like stuff by themselves, Ash Castles On The Ghost Coast (a joint effort with Fleece Records; see above), and Artificial Subterrane. I will admit that a lot of what they put out isn't exactly my thing (I'm a pop addict, what can I say?), but it is worth listening to, believe me. [8/12/97]
