I’ve gotten info about a bunch of different benefit-type shows lately, and while I fully intend to post about all of ‘em at some point, this one really grabbed hold of me, in large part because it’s a benefit for awesome, insanely talented cool dude Lucas Gorham, a mainstay of the Houston scene and the [...]

At first I wasn’t clear why both the A- and B-sides of the Tontons’ latest 7″, Bones, are both titled, um, “Bones” (“Bones 1″ and “Bones 2,” to be specific), but after hearing one roll straight into the other, yeah, I’m starting to get it. I couldn’t tell you if it’s intentional or not, but the two tracks flow together beautifully…

Wow. Tonight’s the first night of the weekend, Friday, December 21st, and it’s not only the first day of Christmas/holiday vacation for some of us (okay, fine; mine was yesterday) but also — if you listen to people who think science is all made-up nonsense but paranoid ideas about aliens and magnetic pole reversal…

For some reason, there’s been a great, cool little crop of videos popping up lately from some awesomely talented Houston bands; I’ve been enjoying the hell out of ‘em, so I figured it’d be a good time to do a little rundown of the stuff I’ve seen recently. Here we go…

Alright, so this is later than I’d have liked, dammit… While we do tend to focus on the H-town stuff on this here site, at least when it comes to shows, we occasionally feel compelled to show love for our hometown kin wherever they may roam, as well…

So, me not being a wine fan, I didn’t make it out to the Houston Wine Fest this past weekend. And neither, as it turns out, were headlining band {The Tontons}…

And now, on to today — Saturday, September 29th — and holy crap, there’s a lot going on. Seriously, there’s so much happening this afternoon/evening that I’m pretty sure I’m actually missing a bunch of it. Damn…

And here we are at Sat., September 1st, the start of yours truly’s very own birth month, and there are a crap-ton of good shows happening, almost all of ‘em stellar H-town lineups. Here’s what sounds/looks good to me…

Holy wow, y’all. It’s Friday, July 6th, which means the weekend’s started, and damn, it’s a busy, busy, busy one, in the best possible way. Before we dive into it, though, I just want to give a heartfelt thumbs-up to {The Tontons}…

It’s Saturday, June 16th, and unfortunately, the little guy decided not to take a nice, long nap this afternoon, so I’ve got to keep this one a little on the brief side, too. I didn’t want to miss out on tonight’s shows, though, because there’s some awesome stuff going on. Here we go…

And here we are again, with the second installment of preview-type writeups for the looming-on-the-horizon Free Press Summerfest, which will explode into physical being this coming Sat.-Sun., June 2nd-3rd. It occurred to me this weekend, btw, that while I’ve talked about FPSF 2012 a few times now, I haven’t really recommended the damn thing as a whole…

I feel like Rip Van Winkle. I’m not sure how the hell it happened, but one minute I’m sitting here watching the munchkins open presents at Christmas, and I blink, and what the fuck? It’s April? Wow. It’s like the start of 2012′s just zipped past…

I’ve got a crazy, crazy weekend ahead of me — not involving music, but involving multiple family birthdays — so I’ve got to keep this brief for now, but never fear, there’s a huge pile of good stuff going on this weekend, starting tonight, Fri., February 3rd…

There’s a small, select handful of bands in this city that honestly can do no freaking wrong in my eyes; literally everything they do somehow turns out to be awesome, in spite of all of the pitfalls of making music in this town. And {The Tontons} are up close to the top of that pile…

While frantically typing about shows this past Saturday, it occurred to me that now might be a good time to mention the “new” booking/label/etc. crew in town, the Treaty Oak Collective, considering that they’d booked three of the shows…

I bought a used Nikon D80 in the summer of 2010 and was instantly discouraged by my photos. It took a lot of reading, looking at others’ photos, adjusting my camera, buying new lenses (most of these are taken with a 35mm f/1.8), and messing around to finally get in a photography groove…

Dang. I’d originally planned to get a lot more posting & reviewing & whatnot done this week, since I’ve been off the whole damn time, but family stuff’s intervened, like sleepover trips to Surfside or last-of-the-year visits to the Children’s Museum…

The whole practice-makes-perfect adage isn’t always true, at least not when it comes to music. There are plenty of bands out there that come out of the gate, guns blazing and with fire in their eyes, and then after they’ve made their name somewhat…
