Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2(?): Fishbone + American Fangs + Pretty Lights + Custom Car Fest + More

The last night of the weekend, Sunday, September 23rd, is upon us, and yep, there’s still some good stuff going on. Not as much as over the past few days, true, but what’s there is pretty damn high on the “goodness” scale. Here goes:

Fitzgerald’s 2nd Grand Reopening Anniversary Weekend, featuring Fishbone, Los Skarnales, & American Fangs @ Fitzgerald’s
Fitzgerald’s 2nd Grand Reopening Anniversary Weekend, featuring Mac Demarco @ Fitzgerald’s

Tonight’s the final night of the Grand Reopening Anniversary Weekend over at Fitz, which means more bands and fun on both floors. And holy crap, one of those floors is like somebody read my damn mind: ska/funk/punk heroes Fishbone, side-by-side with both iconic H-town Latino salsa-ska outfit {Los Skarnales} and in-your-face, utterly addictive rockers {American Fangs}? Holy sweet hell yes, y’all. This is honestly one of the most promising-sounding lineups I’ve seen in quite a while; if you head up there tonight for Angelo Moore & company, make sure you get there early.

Pretty Lights/AraabMuzik/Supervision @ Bayou Music Center
Alright, so I’m pretty behind on the current state of electronic music — I’ve heard a lot of the names, but don’t know the actual music of most. Pretty Lights, however, I have actually seen, this summer at Summerfest, and while I didn’t catch a lot of their set, it was freaking impressive. Pretty Lights’ live show certainly lived up to the name, with utterly massive banks of lights washing across the crowd like a sun exploding, and the music was head-bobbingly mesmerizing, almost narcotic in its laidback vibe. There were plenty of people dancing, to be sure, but for my money it seemed more like we should all be standing there nodding along with our eyes closed, feeling the heat of all those lights on our eyelids.

Custom Car & Body Art Festival, featuring From Guts to Glory, Los Skarnales, Hot Rod Hillbillies, & more @ Sam Houston Race Park
Cars aren’t my thing — I’ll admit that up front — and while I once seriously considered getting a tattoo, the whole needles-piercing-my-skin always freaks me out, so yeah, that didn’t ever happen. But hey, the Custom Car & Body Art Fest people have some good, good bands on their entertainment lineup, including the aforementioned {Los Skarnales} and alt-rock dudes {From Guts To Glory}. No clue who’s playing when, mind you, so those two bands may have already played, but hell, the festival sounds entertaining either way.

Runners-Up:
The Texas Buzz, featuring Another Run, The Soapbox Revolution, & Brompton @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake)
Boogie Blues & Brews, featuring Los Lonely Boys, Jimmie Vaughn with LouAnn Barton, Grady Gaines and The Texas Upsetters, Marcia Ball, Texas Johnny Brown & The Quality Blues Band, Step Rideau & The Zydeco Outlaws, Luther and The Healers, The Octanes, & The Umbrella Man @ Walter Hall Park (League City)
2012 Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival, featuring The Line Up, Strawberry Jam, Caitie Taylor @ The Strand (Galveston)
