Yr Weekend, Pt. 1: Small Sounds + "Heaven" + Robert Ellis + Female Demand + Deep Ella + More

Late, late, late, I know — all I can say in my defense is that every time I sit down to do something on this here site when I normally would, I get caught up instead in all those fun baby- maintenance activities like feeding, burping, changing diapers, cleaning bottles, changing clothes, etc. Not complaining, mind you; the time with the little guy is amazing. But stuff like posting about cool-ass shows for the weekend, well…it’s fallen by the wayside a bit.

At any rate, here’s the installment for tonight, Friday, October 16th, hopefully still in time to make it out to some of these shows, at least:

Chase Hamblin/Robert Ellis/The Small Sounds/The Nightmare River Band @ Walter’s (9:30PM; $8)
Okay, now this is a sweet, sweet show — my personal favorite, gentle-souled country-rockers The Small Sounds, plus the deep, rough-and-awesome Robert Ellis, and the cool, Kinks-esque sound of Chase Hamblin (dunno The Nightmare River Band, sorry). All for $8 ain’t bad, folks…

Heaven, featuring Alan Sparhawk & Mimi Parker @ DiverseWorks (8PM)
Yep, already posted about this one, so in case you’re not up there yet, read about it here.

Limb/Female Demand/Cosmic Sound @ Ray Courtyard (Rice University campus; 7-9PM, free!)
Yeah, I know — you’ve already missed some of this one, I’m afraid, most probably Ghost Mountain side project deal Cosmic Sound (he’s the non-rapping half of GM, if you’re curious). Damn. But hey, Female Demand‘s two-man rhythm section-with-no-chaser thing is pretty damn cool, and I dug Limb‘s laptop-heavy set at the last Block Party I made it out to. And like the bit above says: free!

Deep Ella/Eyes Burn Electric/Floorbound/Five Dollar Friend @ Fitzgerald’s
Nice; I would’ve guessed Deep Ella were long, long, long dead, given how little I’ve heard from ’em lately. These guys are one of the longest-lasting lad to hear they’re back around & rocking again.

Cannabis Corpse/Ramming Speed/Disfigured/P.L.F./Dissent/Satannabis @ The White Swan
Okay, I’ll admit it: I like this one mostly because I read “Cannabis Corpse” as “Cannibal Corpse” and thought, “way to go, White Swan!”

Runners-Up:
Fistful of Soul, featuring Urbane Guerilla Soundsystem @ The Mink (6PM)
Dawn of the Immortals, featuring Chlorine @ Rocbar
Monoceros/Giant Battle Monster/The Mermaids of Judaism/Ellypseas/Evolucid @ Super Happy Fun Land
Michelle Shocked @ Warehouse Live
Lotus Effect/Peekaboo Theory/MacAdams @ Rudyard’s
The Creepshow/The Ghost Storys/Los Desconocidos/No Inbetween/13 Black Coffins @ The Meridian
Bombasta/Chango Man/El Tlazho/The Most Beautiful Losers @ Fitzdown
