Javajazz Down; The Meridian & Numbers Take Up the Slack

Not sure exactly what the deal is, but I just heard the news that something’s up over at the recently-moved Javajazz Coffee House up on the north side of town. Apparently they’re having to move all of their upcoming shows, as well, shifting them out to The Meridian (mostly) and Numbers. Wow.

Hopefully the situation’s not permanent, but for all the hardcore/screamo fans out there, here’s the list of shows that’ve been moved, per the Meridian & Javajazz Websites:

    9/27 — Between The Trees/Farewell/Punchline/Action Item/Killola/Gatsby @ The Meridian
    10/3 — Dance Gavin Dance/Emarosa/Of Mice and Men/Tides of Man/Of Machines @ The Meridian
    10/17 — Thursday/Fall of Troy/The Dear Hunter/Touche Amore @ The Meridian
    10/31 — Owl City/The Scene Aesthetic/Brooke Waggoner @ The Meridian

And here’re the Javajazz shows I’m not sure about. Are they still on? Moved? No clue, but here they are:

8/14 — Battle for the Sickest Show, featuring Last Two Weeks & Stendhal
9/5 — Gahenna Fest 2, featuring Forever The Sickest Kids, Sky Eats Airplane, Driver F, Thee Armada, P.D.A., betterLUCK, Courage Sleeps, Who Shot Mr. Burns, Furthest From The Star, & Fingers Crossed
    9/26 — Hoods

The Meridian site, btw, says that all already-purchased Javajazz tickets will be honored at the new venues. Here’s hoping Javajazz isn’t down for good.

This must be what happens when you try to run a hardcore club out of a strip center in the Klein/Champions area. I wondered if that would last.

Y'know, you'd think that, but the place has been going gangbusters for years now just down the road — they've been getting big-name hardcore acts that used to play places like Fitz or The Engine Room, but now don't even come into Houston proper. Those suburban kids apparently like their hardcore/metalcore/screamo.

I can't say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet the issues are more structural/permit-related, like what happened with Super Happy Fun Land's new space…

You're probably right. It's a shame, too. Houston bites it again.
