BandCamping, Part 2: Promote Yo’self

And now, for Part 2… True to their collective word, the crew behind the recent BandCamp deal have come back with the second installment, this time moving beyond the general “what can we do?” stuff and on to the more practical side of things.

This time out — namely, Sunday, November 2nd from 1-3PM at the ever-welcoming Caroline Collective — they’re talking off-line, real-world promotion for your band, label, or whatever. Presenters Kerry Melonson, B-Boy Craig, & Jacob Calle will all be on-hand to give some hard-won lessons on what to do (and, I’m assuming, what not to do) to promote yourself in the non-electronic realms.

Now, there were supposed to be a bunch of sessions on stuff like this in the first BandCamp, but things got derailed a bit due to the enthusiasm of a lot of the folks involved in the free-form discussion. I didn’t mind at the time, because of the discussion, and now it flat-out seems like a good thing, because — like any good sequel — it pretty much hinted at what could be coming, further down the line.

So, here we are, with the start of what Matthew Wettergren said he hoped would be a full-on series of cool, useful sessions. Personally, this one doesn’t do a heck of a lot for yours truly, being that I’m not in a band, but I can’t stress how critical it is for bands to NOT rely solely on online stuff like Myspace, Twitter, the Hands Up board, or any if the billion online outlets currently out there (like — ahem — this Website).

There’s still a significant part of the populace who don’t run their lives online, and even those that do have about a snowball’s chance in hell of finding your little band in the morass that it Myspace. Doing it in the real world is still necessary.

Anyway, I think this’llbe a good deal. The guys doing the presenting have been around quite a while, they know their shit, and I think anybody who can make it will learn a ton. Check out the link to the BandCamp info above, register using EventBee, and show up…
