Young Mammals & Golden Cities, Today at Cactus (+ Mini-Lost In Space Fest, Coming Up) [3/27/2010 01:05:00 AM]:
IMG_4544 Haven't gotten the full list online just yet, but I wanted to mention these two early so I didn't blow it & leave them out...

Two cool-ass shows today (Saturday, March 27th, that is) at Cactus Music, each one featuring one of my current favorite bands in town right now. Oh, and both are free, free, free. And, honestly, isn't that just about always the perfect price?

At 1PM, indie darlings -- and rightfully so -- Young Mammals are playing, somehow packing their manic, ridiculously energetic (and yet also ridiculously tight) indie-drone-pop into the confines of the store. I was a skeptic 'til I saw these guys a few years back, and I swear, they're really and truly one of the coolest bands you're likely to catch, in this city or any other.

Then, at 3PM, there's atmospheric, pseudo-jazzy spacerockers Golden Cities. I really like their self-titled full-length -- the only one so far -- and was pretty blown away by 'em the one time I've seen 'em live, at the cool, cool Lost In Space Fest last December, although they caught me off-guard a bit with the newer, almost funky-sounding stuff. Either way, they're goooood. Really.

And hey, speaking (sorta) of Lost In Space, it seems the Golden Cities gang will be throwing a second installment, a "mini"-Lost In Space, if you will, on April 30th. The plan is for it to be on the Khon's Bar roof, like the first LIS was supposed to be, and they've apparently already got some cool folks lined up, including LIS alumni My Education and Inner Lights. Keep an eye out...
