So keep that in mind, and also remember that while we try to be objective about music, sometimes it's just not possible. It's all opinion, so take it or leave it.
KNOW ABOUT A SHOW?
Shows, shows, and more shows. Know about a show we don't? Send mail to "shows" at "spacecityrock.com" (sorry for the non-interactive e-mail address, but we're swamped with spam junk), and dammit, we'll try our best to put it up here. This can't work, though, unless we actually hear about the shows, so...

Wow. This is really impressive; this site is the local donewaiting.com "affiliate," run by David Cobb (who also, thankfully, writes for SCR -- thanks, David!), and it's essentially a one-man overview of the Houston scene. Good stuff.
D.L., a local Houston DJ and member of the false cognate collective, runs this little blog, which is partly just his own personal meanderings and partly about his radio show on KTRU, the Vinyl Frontier. Interesting stuff, and the best part of all of it (to me, anyway) is his e-mail-only list of Houston shows (although I, uh, have no idea how you get on it from the site...).
Yes, much like Houston, our sister city Galveston also has its own much-ignored music scene; the two do tend to bleed somewhat into one, but it's nice to see a site specifically dedicated to the G-towners.
Interesting little site focusing on Houston music, although it looks like they're hoping to eventually expand to cover other cities in Texas and surrounding states, too.
This is very, very cool. It's a blog run by Chronic writers Sara Cress and Joey Guerra, and it covers the goings-on in Houston's music scene (local bands and touring bands, whoever's in town) in a nicely personal, down-to-earth way. I'm damn glad to see that somebody's doing something like this.
This is the mailing list for the Hawthorne Improvisation Collective, but I think they're pretty open to improv-type music of all types.
Cool site for a loose local network of bands, each with its own forum, calendar, and other fun stuff. (I can't get to everything, myself, since I'm not a member.)
Okay, so this site seems mostly geared towards club-hoppers rather than music fans, but oh, well...
A beautifully-designed site, and packed full of info, too; anything you want to know about the blues in Houston can be found here.
Hot damn. Hard to believe, but I've only recently checked back on this site, which looks a lot like Space City Rock's long-lost hip-hop twin. Unfortunately, I can't tell when the site was updated last, so it may be more kin to our little e-zine than I'd originally thought...
Good, good, very well-written local e-zine on metal/rock-type bands; they do a particularly thorough job when it comes to reviewing shows that've come to town recently. Good stuff...
Not really a "site," per se, but an information page about a monthly roundtable session where local musicians, club owners, managers, and other music-related people can get together and trade info, hang out, and help one another. Darn good idea, if you ask me...
This site is fucking amazing. Houstonian expat Craig has made it his mission to document the heady days of H-town's punk scene, from the '70s to now. Just reading his entries makes me feel like an utter ignoramus, particularly since I've only been here a decade or so.
A little e-zine/site focused on H-town punk bands. Pretty out-of-date, unfortunately, and a lot of the bands they focus on no longer exist (yeah, yeah, like we can talk...).
Again, a site on local punk & ska bands, but extremely outdated (last updated in 2000,
apparently).
Good site on Houston rock. They seem to be just starting out, but the site looks pretty promising.
Sadly, this 'pears to be all that remains of Hands Up! Houston, but hey, at least it's still active as all hell. Pop in to trade sarcastic banter with smart-assed local scenesters, all of whom know one another and are much cooler than you! (Okay, it's not quite like that; it's just that a lot of the conversations are pretty personal...)
Houston's one music-related newsgroup; ranges from annoying flames and ads to occasional insightful comments (big surprise, there).
Not a bad little site, this one focuses primarily on the blues/rock side of things here in our fair city.
Damn, this site has definitely grown since the last time I checked. Some of the bands they list aren't actually from around here, but their list of Houston-area bands is one of the most comprehensive around (dunno if I'd agree with their "most visited" bit, though...heh).
This looks to be a forum site, primarily, focused on H-town's dance/rave scene.
Cool, cool, ultra-informative blog covering the H-town hip-hop scene. Damn, I need to read this one more often...
Another local music-type blog, and not a bad one; G-Man seems to mostly be into the country/blues side of things, if that's what you're into...
One of the best local music sites out there, seriously; JamHouston's got a nice little niche almost all to itself, in that they cover "jam" music -- improvisational, progressive, jazzy, funky music that really doesn't get mentioned much elsehwere (other than at JazzHouston, below, for the jazz). These folks are heroes.
A good list of local metal/rock shows (somewhat out-of-date right now); nothing fancy, but decent.
Another promising site that lists some local bands & such, but which doesn't seem to've been updated since 2003 or so.
A nice local site about all things goth.
Pretty much the only source around for info on reggae happenings in H-town; unfortunately, the site seems to crash my browser on a regular basis, so be warned.
Interesting site, mostly about the DJ/dance scene...which isn't really my thing, but it's good to see the info out there, either way.
Yes, a site dedicated to local karaoke bars and contests. Perfect for those nights when you just have to find somewhere to get up and sing "The Gambler" to a room of total strangers.
Despite its name, this isn't really a "network" of anything, per se, but rather the music-and-other-crap blog of local scenester Ryan (formerly of Kiss Kiss Kill Kill). Entertaining reading...
All. Mëtäl. Shows. Grawr.
Booking group based in Brenham. Might no longer be doing shows; not sure.
Hate Tank are a hard-working couple of kids who've dedicated themselves to setting up ultra-hardcore/noisecore/metal shows here in Hell City. I haven't been to any of their shows, I'm afraid (the heavy stuff's really not my thing), but they seem to do good work, nonetheless, and hey, variety's always a good thing, right?
'Cause hey, ravers need shows, too.
According to their MySpace page, these folks are currently "on a break"...
Every Saturday, same time (2-5PM), same place (The Shady Tavern), 3-4 mystery bands (generally local, usually cool). Intriguing idea; hope they can keep it up!
A dynamic show-booking duo of ex-Hands Up people, these guys put on some damn good shows.
Focused on Austin experimental/noise musicians and bands, but also lists some Houston folks.
Directory of all kinds of Texas-related stuff, including music.
No, it's not music, but hey. It's a good cause, well worth helping out, and if you've got a problem with it, deal.
A local H-town trance crew.
Cool online message board devoted to Texas garage rock/punk.
Not music-related, no, but damn, sock monkeys sure are cool.
Film/advertising services.
Management/booking company.
Sound engineering services.
