As I've said before, I'm far from an authority on what's what in the music scene here in town; the below could all be bullshit, for all I know. So if you've got any info that's not on here, please just drop me a line at "gaijin" at "spacecityrock.com", and I'll attempt to add it as soon as I can.

ADVANCED AUDIO SOLUTIONS:

Contact: Gerry G

I don't really know what this place is like, but it sounds pretty decent... Gerry, the studio's owner, says he does projects "as a whole" and prices them accordingly; he's got a 24-track analog with dolbyS and 24 digital (DA88), Pro Tools, and a bunch of other stuff. He's recorded stuff for lots of folks in town, including Secret Agent 8, Latch Key Kids, Los Skarnales (and pretty much everything else on Pinche Flojo), 13th Hour, Flies in Paradise, and elsewhere... ANALGESIC STUDIOS:
P.O. Box 1008
League City, TX. 77574-1008

Analgesic is actually a home-studio sort of deal, run by Ruel Russell and Bob Wall, ex-of St. Vitus Dance & Bone Simple (and currently of the Grangers, in Bob's case)... Despite the fact that they're not a "big" studio, though, they can still get a damn cool sound, as evidenced by the last Bone Simple CD. They don't do a whole lot of recording, preferring to work with people they know and like -- I'm honestly not sure how much recording they're doing at all, these days.... [9/23/2007]

One of the few on here I've actually had opportunity to try, so I can actually say something concrete about it... This studio's been around a couple of years now, having moved here from Corpus Christi, but moved not too long ago into a new space out near Bellaire and the beltway that's got way more space and a lot of nice stuff built in. Marco Saenz, the guy who owns and runs the place, does some really cool stuff. He's got a fair bit of cool gear and, more importantly, knows his setup inside-out; he can get a real good sound real easily - oh yeah, and he's a really nice guy, too. He records a lot of local rock bands in town, but also does a lot of hip-hop and Tejano stuff, too, with some impressive credentials... Overall, he's a great guy and a darn good engineer (not that I'm an expert, but hey). I'm told he's even doing "clinics" for people these days, mostly aimed at people who use 4-tracks, DAWs, mini disk recorders, etc., who want to learn how to get a good sound out of their equipment - sounds like it might be worth checking into.
Also, he started up his own little record label, Norbac Records, a while back, in order to release a really-cool comp, entitled Songs From the Icehouse (the idea is that it also serves as a showcase of sorts of what Marco can do -- check it out; keep in mind, though, that it was somewhat limited by the old studio). Unfortunately, it seems that good as the CD is, he didn't sell too many, so at this point a 2nd comp is looking unlikely...sigh. [9/8/99]

From GM Todd: "Our approach is pretty simple: always maintain an artist friendly, service oriented studio. We use the best gear available, but never let the gear get in the way of the performance. We have worked with various local bands, hiphop’ers, done commercials, books on tape, and even recorded voiceovers for a new warcraft-esqe video game. Check out our website, www.RecordWithBarron.com, listen to our media player, call me if you have any questions or just want to get a better feel of what we do." [9/24/2007]

DEAD CITY SOUND:

Dead City Sound is the new studio run by ex-Johnny Killed Rock n Roll co-owner Chris Ryan, who started the place up when partner Eric left for cooler/wetter climes in the Pacific NW (and who I think also rocks/rocked the house himself as part of God's Temple of Family Deliverance). I don't know Chris myself, unfortunately, but I've heard good stuff about folks he's recorded, and if there's a cool band in town, odds are that he's recorded 'em at one time or another (Bring Back the Guns, The Jonx, Something Fierce, Sharks and Sailors, Fatal Flying Guilloteens, While You Were Gone, etc., etc.). Plus, it's apparently cheapety-cheap -- $25 an hour -- because Ryan feels that even po' local folks deserve to be able to afford decent recording services. Gotta admire the guy for that... Haven't ever been to this place, but I talked a bit with the owner, John Moran, a looong while back, and he seemed to know his stuff pretty damn well. They're a 48-track studio, and while not cheap, they've got some pretty heavy credits under their belt (Rolling Stones, Destiny's Child, Depeche Mode, etc.). Oh, and they used to be on Chimney Rock, but apparently moved out to Tomball sometime since I last spoke to 'em. (It's been a while.) [9/23/2007]

Well, as usual, I haven't been to this place myself, but these folks seem cool, at least. They've apparently been around for 17 years, and are located right next to the Anderson Fair folk club up in Montrose. They've reportedly got a "well designed control room" and a "large 15' high ceilinged recording room", and their site has a cool little deal called the On-line Musician's Database, a sort of music referral service that some folks out there might find pretty useful... Their rates sound reasonable to my recording-novice ears: $35 an hour plus tape for DA-88 format, pay as you go. Give 'em a call...

Well, I got some more info on this place from the owner himself (Joe, that is), so I figured I'd summarize it up here. The studio's a small place out near Hobby, and they do most of their recording on analog formats (1 and 2 inch tape). The owner says he Logic Audio for digital editing, and uses a 32-channel Mackie console, as well as "about 25 years' worth of outboard stuff and good mics." They've apparently worked with all different styles and specialize in recording bands "live," rather than overdubbing track after track. There you go... [8/25/2003]

Heard from one of the two owners of the place, Jeff Johnson, so I figured I'd put a little note up here about 'em. Johnson co-owns/runs Pigeon Eater with Terry Nunn, who also does the sound over at Walter's on Washington (which, I should note, is surprisingly good for a place that looks like it was built from the remains of a quonset hut with a storefront tacked onto it). They do some good stuff, it sounds like, and have recorded everybody from By the End of Tonight to The Monocles to Arthur Yoria. Plus, they're apparently doing cheapo-cheap rates for live, on-the-fly recording. [9/25/2007]

A fairly new studio in town, Static House is slowly making a name for itself - their prices are good, they pride themselves on using all analog stuff (I think?), and Jamie, the guy who pretty much runs the place, is a really cool guy. I haven't been up there yet myself, but I've heard good things from folks who have... Like Aztlan, above, Static House released it's own "showcase compilation" a while back, entitled Full Frequency Package, so check that out - they've also done a couple of videos, as well as stuff by The Lost Episodes, Rooster Cockburn, The Grimple Twins, and Dissociation. Well, I've never used these guys myself, but they're the big studio in town for local bands (and plenty of others). I'm told they do have a tremendous amount of cool gear, both new & vintage, so that's a definite plus. Again, I can't say really what the place is like, but Dan Workman, who runs the place, has a pretty good reputation about town and a lot of experience - I've heard lots of good things about 'em, even from other studio folks (I have heard a few folks bitch about it, but y'know). Oh yeah, and their rates aren't the lowest in town, but they're definitely not too bad, and I'm told that they offer bands 50%-off rates during off-peak times. Pretty cool of 'em... [4/28/2004]
