Go See Deerhoof Tomorrow, On Us (Update: Gone!)

[UPDATE II: And then…they were gone. poof! Congrats to James for being fastest and most articulate on the email. Apologies to other would-be ticket-claimers.]

[UPDATE: Per the kindly, ever knowledgeable Marisa at Four Paws Media, it appears that Flying, who was supposed to be playing with Deerhoof tomorrow night, is actually now Fertile Crescent, instead. Which is 2 of the 3 members of Flying. I think I’m more confused now than I was before, but there you go…]

Longtime readers of SCR will know that yes, we heart the Deerhoof. Way, way, waaaay back in 2003, intrepid writer and H-town expat Conor corralled the band briefly for an illuminating li’l chat, and we here at SCR HQ have been following the band as best we’ve been able in the years since.

They play some strangely captivating, quirky-yet-pretty music that bridges the space between über-arty experimentation and sugary-good pop sweetness (the latter of which is definitely helped along by Satomi Matsuzaki’s often-delicate, childlike, lilting/warbling vocals); it’s definitely got a heck of a lot of melody in it, yeah, but the repetitive, oddly-built song structures don’t resemble pop so much as they do the whole No-Wave thing (albeit not as noisy). To hear what the heck I’m talking about, check out an MP3 of “Offend Maggie”, off the band’s latest Kill Rock Stars album of the same name. Is good, yes.

Alternatively, you can actually go see (er, hear) the band live and in-person tomorrow, Thursday, November 6th, at Numbers — they’re playing with Experimental Dental School & Flying Fertile Crescent, neither of whom I know diddly about, sorry, but Deerhoof alone is worth the trek to Montrose. Doors at 8PM, show at 9PM, $12 to get in.

Y’know what, though? Screw that whole “ticket price” thing, because we’ve got two free tickets (okay, they’re actually guestlist spots, but y’know) for the show, ready to go to the first person who emails me at “gaijin” at “spacecityrock dot com” and articulates why in the heck they want ’em. If that’s you, get on the email & let me know, and they’re all yours.
