Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Screwtape + Common + Scott Biram + No Talk + Mic Wars + More

Back again with the hopefully-handy little weekend writeups, and just to make sure it feels like Old Times, yep, I’m late once again… There’s quite a bit going on this weekend, definitely, but I’m afraid this’ll have to be part 1 for now, with the rest to come later.

First of all, though, a little bit of news… The show at Walter’s this coming Monday, May 31st, which was supposed to include Leatherface, Ninja Gun, Young Livers, & H-town’s own {Hell City Kings}, has sadly been cancelled, according to the {I Heart U Productions} gang. Not sure why, but just so you don’t show up at Walter’s on Monday night ready to get yer punk on & get all disappointed instead.

Beyond that, yours truly goofed and had the Scale The Summit show listed up here for tonight when it’s actually tomorrow night. Gah. Sorry, sorry — if you notice anything weird like that in this list, please comment or email, y’all…

Oh, and apparently The Meridian is once again The Meridian and is no longer Wired Live. Or something. Fuck, I give up — I’ve got no idea what this place is called anymore. Anyway, here’s what looks good to me for tonight, Friday, May 28th:

Spain Colored Orange/Screwtape/listen listen @ Dean’s Credit Clothing ($5)
Always cool to see/hear orchestral popsters {Spain Colored Orange} (whose full-length I’ve really been getting into lately & am enjoying the heck out of) and murky, moody folksters {listenlisten}, but I must confess that the true draw of this show, at least for me, is Screwtape, which I’m told is a new deal fronted by awesome local rapper {Nosaprise}. I’ve got no clue what they sound like, but with Nosa onboard, I’m expecting greatness.

Common/Biz Markie @ Warehouse Live
Okay, what freaking day is this one, again? Yesterday everything I saw said Common & Biz were playing the Warehouse Thursday…and then I come in today, and it’s apparently tonight, instead. Ack.

Darren Hoff and the Hard Times/Scott H. Biram/Beetle @ The Continental Club
I really, really need to get out to see Scott Biram sometime; I’ve heard quite a bit of his rough-edged, drunk-and-bitter country-rock songs, and I’ve been mightily, mightily impressed.

The Spits/Nobunny/The Energy/No Talk (LP release) @ Rudyard’s
Afraid I haven’t heard either of the headliners for this one, but I have heard a bit of both {The Energy} and {No Talk} (this show’s an LP release for the latter of the pair), and they’re pretty damn neat, in an old-school-punx kind of way…

Mic Wars III, featuring S.M.O.K.E., Prince Charming, Black Boy Craig, Bishop Black, & DJ Big Dee @ The Meridian
Ooh, yeah. I’ve got a confession to make: I’ve never, ever, ever been to a real-live mic battle. The closest I’ve come was watching 8 Mile, and no, that’s not very. So the whole thing sounds damn cool to me; one of these days, maybe I’ll get brave enough to make it out to something like this.

Runners-Up:
Searching For Signal @ Walter’s
The Bamboozle Road Show, featuring All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Good Charlotte, Hanson, Forever The Sickest Kids, Cartel, & Cady Groves @ Verizon Wireless Theater
The Bottom Four @ The Mink
Barrington Levy @ Club Riddims
