Don't Let Monday Get You Down [10/23/2006 10:20:00 AM]:
Yes, if your life is much like mine, Monday sucks; it's a cliché, sure (not to mention the subject of several songs), but all that day-job work shit that seemed doable Sunday evening suddenly looms into focus bright and early Monday AM and causes me to break out in a cold sweat. Not good.

Luckily, this Monday (today, that is) is different, thanks to SCR contributor and Houston Calling head honcho David Cobb, who tonight will be hosting his 2nd-ever Houston Calling Happy Hour show at The Proletariat. It's an excellent, excellent bill of locals, with Something Fierce (never heard, but heard good things about), the Southern Backtones (good stuff), and the Bright Men of Learning (whom I've heard very recently & was blown away by), and best of all, it's early, as in "starts at 7PM." This is very good news for lamers like yours truly who have to be home, at least, by a decent hour on weekdays.

At any rate, this'll be a good show. It's cheap, it's early, the bands are all good, and hey, what the hell else are you doing on a Monday night? (Just TiVo CSI and you'll survive, I promise.)

Weekly Update [10/19/2006 01:14:00 AM]:
What the hell? Yes, we've got even more stuff up, folks, and it ain't yet November. Welcome to the first step towards becoming a real-live weekly e-zine -- if all goes well, we'll be putting reviews, live reviews, and interviews online every single freakin' week from now 'til eternity. This time out, we've got love for The Thermals (and yep, the astute might note that the feature was up last week before the band played our fair city; sorry, couldn't post about it until now), plus reviews of relatively-new releases from Anti-Flag, Strike Anywhere, Aloha, Glue, and Just A Fire. Enjoy...

Holy Shit, This Makes Me Happy [10/08/2006 11:59:00 PM]:
October, weirdly enough, is turning into a good-news month for Houston music. First there's the note from Jim Pirtle that notsuoH, one of the quirkiest, coolest, most unique "venues" I've ever been to, will be reopening, and now it appears that the long-time-gone Public News, the very rag that made me curious in the first place about the various murky rock bands that populate this city, has been brought back from the dead.

As of Nov. 8th, apparently, the PN will once again grace the magazine racks, club counters, and street corners of our fair city, and that's awesome. Seriously, this makes me happy; the only way things could get better (aside from yours truly winning the lottery and starting up a radio station that blows the doors off the Buzz & co., of course) would be if Cactus Music & Video was somehow resurrected. Anybody? And to the PN 3.0 folks (counting the Houston's Other as v. 2.0): if you need any help, just drop us a line...

Update for October [10/06/2006 12:28:00 AM]:
New month, so there's new stuff up -- interviews with rapper Del the Funky Homosapien and pop-rockers OK Go, both just in time for their appearances in or around H-town this weekend (check the shows list for details). Beyond that, we've got some cool live reviews and reviews of everything from White Whale to J Dilla to The Wiggins. Check it out.

Damn Good News [10/06/2006 12:25:00 AM]:
We here at SCR were very sad to see the place go, so it's very, very nice to be able to say that notsuoH is coming back. According to owner Jim Pirtle, Clark's, the bar that's been living in the building's downstairs area for a while now, is closing down, and Pirtle's reopening his art space/home/cafe once again to visitors. Which is very cool.
