Shoots Coming Up: In Bloom Music Fest is Less Than Two Months Out

Alright, so by now you’d have to be pretty damn out-of-touch to not know that the much-loved/much-derided summertime Houston music festival known variously as FPSF, Free Press Summer Fest, or just Summerfest is no more. In its place (kind of) is In Bloom. The revamped/rebranded festival is now not in the summer (hence the “kind of”) but will instead be happening in the springtime, on Saturday & Sunday, March 24th & 25th, at the ever-awesome Eleanor Tinsley Park just west of Downtown…

Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Giant Kitty + Only Beast + Miears + The Killers + Sucre + Lane 8 + More

Okay, folks — it’s that time again, Friday, January 26th, and it’s the first jam-packed evening of a jam-packed weekend of stuff, so I figured I’d better talk about it, at least briefly, before it’s upon us. First up, though, an apology: for some reason, I could’ve sworn awesome doom-sludge-prog-metal folks {Omotai} were playing up at The Secret Group tonight, but apparently that’s not the case…

Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Dinolion’s RASHOMON Debut Screening + BowiElvis Fest + More

Alright, y’all; running late for today, Saturday, January 6th, but I’d be seriously, seriously remiss if I let the stuff happening this evening just slide past, unmentioned. Because it’s neat stuff, truly…

Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Second Lovers + Miears + The Tie That Binds + We Were Wolves + Warrior + More

Howdy, all — it’s Friday, January 5th, and we’re heading into a weekend with some very cool stuff happening, so I wanted to mention a bit of it before everybody makes their plans and all that. I know I haven’t done one of these in a long, long while, and I’d kinda sworn I never would again, but there’s too much going on, y’know?…

Matt Hammon Steps Out On His Own with His Silver Suitcase, Tonight at WOMH

If you’re a fan of Texas-bred indie/emo, odds are pretty good that you’ve heard Matt Hammon, even if you don’t realize it. That’s the way it was for me, at least; I thought my initial introduction to the guy’s music…

Day for Night 2017 Rundown, Pt. 4: Cardi B + The Jesus Lizard + Kimbra + Tyler Barber + Jamie XX + BOOTS + Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Yep, we’re coming down to the wire, friends — today, Friday, December 15th, is the start of this weekend’s Day for Night festival over at Post HTX, starting with this evening’s Friday Summit and continuing on into two full days of music & art…

Day for Night 2017 Rundown, Pt. 3: True American + Shabazz Palaces + N N O A + Demdike Stare + of Montreal + Princess Nokia + James Blake + Faten Kanaan + Lil B

Annnnnd here we are again, y’all. It’s time for Round Three of our preview/rundown things for this year’s Day for Night, which is this coming Friday-Sunday, December 15th-17th at what used to be the old Downtown Post Office but is now the art/performance space Post HTX. The weekend promises to be packed full of all types of music — trending towards the odd, quirky, or experimental, mind you…

Day for Night 2017 Rundown, Pt. 2: Nina Kraviz + Pussy Riot + B L A C K I E + Narcons + Andy Stott + Pretty Lights + Perfume Genius + St. Vincent + XLX

Howdy, all — we’re back again with Round Two of our annual-ish bunch of randomly-chosen previews for Day for Night, Houston’s quirkiest music/art/technology/whatever festival, which is nearly upon us…

Day for Night 2017 Rundown, Pt. 1: Earl Sweatshirt + Solange + Bjarki + Collin Hedrick + Cashmere Cat + En Vogue + Kona FM + Acid Jeep + Rezz

Yes, yes, yes. Day for Night 2017 is right around the corner, just one solitary week away — it kicks off with a Summit session of talks & whatnot this Friday, December 15th, and then the music, art, and all the rest happens on Saturday, December 16th, and Sunday, December 17th, the whole deal unfolding over at Post HTX downtown…

Day for Night, Coming Up Fast: A Cool Discount Just For You + Set Times Now Live

Argh. Been fighting a nasty cold, y’all, and desperately hoping I kick it before the big day, so I’ve been slipping a bit on talking about the rapidly-approaching Day for Night festival, which happens just over a week from now, Dec. 15-17, at Post HTX

FPSF No More: In Bloom Rises From the Ashes, and in the Freaking Springtime

Well…wow. I’ve been behind on Houston-related music news lately, it’s true, but out of all of it, this definitely takes the cake. We got word this morning that our city’s iconic nine-year-old music festival, alternately known as Free Press Summer Festival, FPSF, or Summerfest, is changing in a fairly big way…

Zine Fest Houston Ventures Into the Cyberfuture, This Afternoon (And a Long-Overdue Thank-You to Shane)

Hey, folks, just wanted everybody to be aware that today — Saturday, November 11th — is this year’s Zine Fest Houston, and it promises to be a very, very cool one. It’s nice to see that what started out as a humble gathering…

I Could Die and I Wouldn’t Mind: The Jesus and Mary Chain Arrive at White Oak Music Hall, Tonight

The Jesus and Mary Chain continue to rock like the kids they were when I discovered them as a high school freshman in 1985. The strength of JAMC is that they distill music into simple memorable riffs, and songs like “The Two of Us,” “Always Sad,” and “Get On Home”

Today: Foamhenge Arises at Karbach, with Blue Oyster Cult, The Sword, & More

Wow. It’s been a crazy-ass weekend, with a whole lot of good stuff going on, but this damn near takes the cake. See, today (Sunday, November 5th) up at the Karbach Brewing Co. is the first-ever Foamhenge, starting at around 1:30PM

Hear This Now: EL LAGO Releases Their Debut Full-Length Tonight, Plus a Video

It’s been a few years, I know, but it felt like high time to get back to the sporadic Hear This Now thing we were doing for a little while there, pointing/listening to cool H-town bands we’ve been listening to lately…

Last Chance to Get a Day for Night Discount & Help Planned Parenthood, Today (Plus Awesome Videoage)

You might recall that we posted a little while back that the good people behind Day for Night, Houston’s coolest music-and-other-stuff festival…

An Era Ends: The Print Version of the Houston Press Is Dead

This year, I swear to God. Some days it feels like everything in the whole freaking world has been upended, from the insanity in the White House to every remaining musical icon dying (rest in peace, Fats Domino) to the Houston Astros winning the World Series…

Day for Night Peeks Over the Horizon: Two Cool Pieces of DFN-Related News (+ Stupid Online Controversy!)

As mentioned a little while back, this year’s edition of Day for Night — which yours truly was lucky enough to check out last year, and which made me kick myself for not going the first year of the festival, as well…

Tonight: Action Bronson Serves It Up at Warehouse Live

Harrison Ford is an Action Bronson fan. No, seriously; granted, I’ve got no clue whether he likes Bronson’s music, but in a recent GQ interview (which you should absolutely read, by the way), the bullshit-hating, laconic actor apparently likes Fuck, That’s Delicious, Bronsons food-themed show…

Good Things Coming: Day for Night 2017 Lineup & Tickets, Just Released

It’s about goddamn time we got some good news, y’all. Half this city’s still ripping out its floors and walls and replacing every thing they own, schools and libraries are closed or relocated or damaged beyond repair, businesses are shut down until further notices, big, fun music festivals and conventions are rescheduling or just plain canceling, and every time it rains, we all cringe like a dog that’s been kicked…

Houston Open Air, Another Harvey Casualty

Well, damn. I’d wondered, honestly, if it might happen — after all, we’ve seen a lot of cancellations of shows of various sizes, but so far the raft of upcoming festivals seemed to be somewhat immune…

(UPDATE #4) Post-Harvey, H-town Gets Back to Its Feet: Heroes, Shows, Fundraisers, & Friends In Need

What a week. I haven’t been online much, I know, at least not on SCR — I’ve been stuck to Facebook and Twitter like the rest of Houston, trying to keep tabs on friends and coworkers and loved ones…

Hurricanes Suck: A Whole Bunch of Shows Get Cancelled/Postponed This Weekend

Yes, folks, it’s time once again to grapple with one of Houston’s worst aspects (I mean, beyond the heat, mosquitoes, grime, um…okay, let’s move on): hurricanes. I hope everybody around here is being safe and getting prepared, because it looks like it could be very bad; if you’ve already headed for the hills, yeah, I get that…

Good Things Today: At the Drive-In + Football, Etc. + Ruiners + Saint Arnold 23rd Anniversary + Pop Shop Houston + More

Alright, folks — still recovering somewhat from last weekend (a combination of sogginess, tinnitus, and heatstroke), but there’s some truly, truly excellent stuff going on today/tonight (Saturday, June 10th), so I didn’t want to let ’em slip away…

FPSF 2017 Rundown, Pt. 3: Kay Weathers + The Wheel Workers + Party Favor + Milky Chance + The Struts + The Shins + St. Paul & The Broken Bones + Miike Snow + Jon Bellion

And now, here we go with what’ll most likely be our last installment of the random previews thing we do every year for FPSF (aka Free Press Summer Festival, although these days it’s minus the “Free Press” part), which will be happening starting tomorrow…

FPSF 2017 Rundown, Pt. 2: K.I.D. + Bang Bangz + Aminé + Coast Modern + Night Drive + Grouplove + Rose Ette + G-Eazy + Frightened Rabbit + Echos

Here we are, again, back with another randomly-chosen look at the bands and musicians who’ll be up at Eleanor Tinsley Park (hopefully) on the edge of Downtown this weekend — Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th — for the musical festival-type thing known as FPSF

FPSF 2017 Rundown, Pt. 1: Mod Sun + Camera Cult + DREAMERS + Us. + Bad Suns + Hurray For The Riff Raff + Tove Lo + Lorde + Cage The Elephant + Solange

Alright, people — we’re doing this, dammit. If this feels like it’s getting off to a late start, well, it kind of is, partly because we here at SCR have been having to shift focus to and from all the other festivals going on around here lately, and that’s pushed this back a bit…

Madness on Main 2017 Rundown, Pt. 3: Traci Lavois Thiebaud + Mantra Love + Hector Ward and the Big Time + Perseph One + Soul Creatures + Bayou City Funk + Sailor Poon + Dem

And here we are, yet again, for Round 3 of our previews of Madness on Main Music Fest, which will be this coming Sunday, May 28th, over at White Oak Music Hall and its surrounding environs (possibly also at Raven Tower, I’m guessing?)…

Madness on Main 2017 Rundown, Pt. 2: The Phantom Royals + Handsomebeast + Flyger Woods + Kiko Villamizar + Ruiners + texture: Yellow + MOTHS + Black Pistol Fire

Alright, people — we’re back again with Round 2 of SCR‘s traditional rundowns on as many people playing this weekend’s Madness on Main Music Festival up at White Oak Music Hall as we can manage (and keep our sanity, anyway)…

Madness on Main 2017, This Sunday (Rundown, Pt. 1): Lyric Michelle + Something Fierce + Lloronas + LIMB + Flower Graves

Oh, wow. The Season of Music Festivals rolls on and on, and now we’re rapidly approaching the two I’ve truly been looking forward to, albeit for very different reasons: Madness on Main Street and FPSF

Right Damn Now: Love Street Music Fest Is Happening, Over at Karbach Brewing Company

Yeah, I know this is stupidly late, but I didn’t want to let it slip completely by, because it’s a very cool thing going on at a very cool late. Today — as in Sunday, May 21st — is Love Street Music Fest

This Weekend: Rock Out in New Caney With Jason Derulo, Vanilla Ice, & The Tontons

Okay, so do you remember when I said there’s practically a music festival every other weekend for the next few months? Well, it’s actually closer to every weekend…

This Weekend: Middlelands Mashes Up Knights, Lasers, Wenches, & Bass Drops

As noted previously, we’ve got a crap-ton of festivals coming up in and around the Houston area — seriously, there’s like a festival almost every other weekend for the next couple of months…

Tonight: Catch The New Pornographers Up at White Oak Music Hall (Plus Video!)

Yes, I realize Chris Brown is playing somewhere in Houston this evening. And no, I emphatically do not give a single shit about that, and neither should you. Why? Well, because instead of giving your hard-earned dollars so you can watch a pathetic manbaby who likes to beat on women attempt to rap/sing over lukewarm R&B, you could be witnessing something awesome…

One Month Out: FPSF 2017 Is On Its Way, So You Better Get Damn Ready

It’s that time in H-town’s musical year when it feels like the festivals just keep popping up left and right and left again, y’know what I mean? Hell, we’ve already had a couple slide by, namely Houston Whatever Fest and The Munchies Picnik

Tonight: Help Out Planned Parenthood at Friends With Benefits (and Check Out Some Awesome Music, Obviously)

So, there’s quite a bit going on today and tonight (Saturday, April 15th), and a whole slew of excellent, excellent shows I happen to think are worth seeing — The Maine & The Mowgli’s, Scott Biram, Foxygen

Tonight: Two From Back in the Day, with Blueprint & The Tie That Binds (Plus The Inverters & Narrow Head, Too!)

Holy shit, people. Yeah, yeah — I’m well aware that Morrissey is playing tonight, Friday, April 14th (Or is he? Who can say, really, especially after canceling Wednesday’s San Antonio gig?), this time down in Sugar Land…

Houston Whatever Fest, This Weekend

And now, from the Better Late Than Never Department (Hopefully)… I’ve been meaning to post for a good long while now about Houston Whatever Fest, which unrolls this Saturday and Sunday

Two Awesome Things Tonight: Cameron Dezen Hammon & Night Drive + Hescher (Plus Videos!)

Hey, y’all — it’s Thursday, March 30th, and holy crap, I cannot believe we’re right at the end of March already. Seriously? Damn. I am way, way, way behind with a whole lot of stuff… That’s not why we’re here, though, so we’ll skip that and focus on the here and now. Good? Good…

Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Golden Sombrero + Brand New Hearts + Excision + Electric Six + Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Sounds of Scotland + More

Hey, folks — it’s the start of a busy-as-hell weekend, looks like, so I wanted to at least mention a handful of cool-sounding (to me, anyway) shows going on tonight, Friday, May 24th. I’m a bit under the gun today, though (yeah, like that’s abnormal), so if I neglect mentioning your band/show specifically, um, sorry?…
