Tonight: Check Out the 6th Annual Bowie Elvis Fest Over in Mid-Main

d623b4e7-ca64-4f81-94fe-7699f600bc90Late notice, again, I know — I’d actually meant to post a second “Yr. Weekend” deal tonight, but it turns out the Pennywise/Anti-Flag show at Fitzgerald’s tonight is already sold out, so…

However, even if you didn’t get your tickets to that in time, there’s another very cool thing going on right now, namely the 6th Annual Bowie Elvis Festival over in Mid-Main. It’s happening at both The Continental Club and The Big Top, and it sounds like a hell of a lot of fun.

The overall gist is to celebrate the shared birthdays of David Bowie and Elvis Presley, two guys who couldn’t be much further apart musically and personally if they’d tried to be but who nevertheless drastically altered the course of Rock ‘n Roll as we know it (and yes, both of whom know/knew how to put on a show).

Local scene hero Hank Schyma of the {Southern Backtones} (who’s going by Pecos Hank for this show, I believe) started off the tradition as a annual, low-key party, but it’s grown significantly from there, and tonight’s installment features a bunch of excellent bands from here and elsewhere, including {Hayden Jones}, {Espantapajaros}, Dallas dudes Marquis of Vaudeville, and the aforementioned Pecos Hank, plus a Bowie/Elvis-themed costume contest, food trucks, burlesque from Dem Damn Dames, Bowie/Elvis-themed games, and (I think) St. Arnold’s beer. Hoo-ah.

And yes, it did start a couple of hours ago now, but dammit, this is Houston, where nothing ever starts on time, and it’ll be going on for a good long while anyway. The whole thing costs $15, which sounds like a bargain to me. Get on over there…
