Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Deafheaven + Peloton + MDC + Marriages + Verbal Abuse + Some Nerve + More

970920_10200666205809513_942900264_nYeah, I know I’ve been skipping a lot of Sundays lately; what can I say? Recently they’ve been pretty quiet, y’know, but there’s a handful of good things going on tonight, June 23rd. Here we go:

Deafheaven/Marriages/Peloton @ Mango’s ($10/$12)
By far the highlight of the night, at least for yours truly; Mango’s has a truly nice lineup going this evening, with local noise-rockers Peloton opening things up the night with their raw, carve-your-ears, Unsane-esque sound, followed by Marriages, which is a side project of Greg Burns & Emma Ruth Rundle from Red Sparowes. I haven’t heard the latter yet, sadly, but I’ve heard good things…

Then there’s headliners Deafheaven, whose new album, Sunbather, is freaking mind-blowing, a heavy, ear-filling melding of atmospheric, shoegazer-y post-rock with death-metal vocals (and a fair amount of metal fury, to boot). Take a listen over here:

MDC/Verbal Abuse/In Defence/H.R.A./Some Nerve @ Walter’s ($13)
Then, over at Walter’s, there’s a full-on pile of old-school streetpunk, highlighted by Austin/SF/Portland band MDC, who are bona-fide icons of hardcore and political activism. Known for such classic tunes as “John Wayne Was a Nazi,” the band was one of the first to merge punk rock with the blazing speed of thrash metal.

featured-flyerThey’re playing with a bunch of other cool folks, like H-town-gone-SF outfit Verbal Abuse, and current locals H.R.A. and Some Nerve, the latter of which I’ve been needing to hear for quite a while now. Fans of punk or anything loud, hey, this may be right up your alley…
