Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: Vacation Eyes + Mydolls + SXSW Overflow 2013 + SCN Zine Release + Devil Killing Moth + More

386436_155030897992311_1669523271_nMoving slow as usual; this week was a bear at work and at home, unfortunately, so I’m still catching up. Some good stuff’s happening tonight, Friday, March 22nd, though, so don’t miss out, eh? Here goes:

Mydolls/Vacation Eyes/Hearts of Animals/Stewart Anderson @ Walter’s ($7)
Hell, yeah. This one’s my favorite, no question — not only is it an all-too-rare appearance by weird-yet-mesmerizing experimental-pop chanteuse {Hearts of Animals}, but it’s also the first-ever show by brand-new band {Vacation Eyes}, which is John Baldwin of {The Wild Moccasins} (and formerly of Teenage Kicks, as well), Mars Varela from {The Busy Kids}, and Jenny Hoyston of Erase Errata — who, by the by, apparently forsook SF for Houston not too long ago, and who’s originally from Surfside Beach, where yours truly’s been spending a fair amount of time lately…

Anyway, I have yet to actually be able to hear anything by the band, sadly, but with a pedigree like that, you’d better believe I’m psyched to see/hear what happens. Plus, there’s headliners {Mydolls}, who were a punk/post-punk band back when your parents were in college, most likely, and who still rock harder than you, even down a guitarist. Kathy Johnston, you are still sorely missed.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Another Pearl Harbor, Skyline FiftyFour, Flux Bikes, & The Witherees @ Super Happy Fun Land
Yep, the final night of the SXSW Overflow 2013 festivities over at Super Happy Fun Land; talked about this already today, but make sure you check out the show before it’s gone, gone, gone, esp. cool local duo {The Witherees}.

SCN:The Zine Release Party, featuring Adam Warnock, Richie Branson, Guwange, Broken Satellite, & John H. @ Avant Garden
This one kinda caught me by surprise, honestly; I’ve read {Space City Nerd} for a little while now, and I like it quite a bit, but when I saw that they were starting up their very own zine to go along with the Website, well… I’ve gotta say, my first thought was, “Really? Why?”

But hey, the last time I thought that about some young upstart of a publication, it was the {Free Press Houston}, so I think it’s safe to say that my skills as a prognosticator pretty much suck. (Hrm. Maybe I should just go ahead and predict that I won’t ever win the lottery, that The Weakerthans never do tour through Houston again, and that Houston never gets city-wide free wi-fi…)

386424_502810503089957_57125083_nAnyway, all goofiness aside, more power to these guys, and I hope to see the inaugural issue out somewhere soon. Part of me definitely misses SCR‘s own ink-and-paper days, it’s true, so if somebody else can do it and pull it off, like the FPH has, hell, I’m all for it. Plus, I’m excited/surprised to see {Guwange} is still alive & kicking — I figured Rex had moved on to other things long, long ago. Glad to see that’s not the case…

Only Beast/Devil Killing Moth/Soup @ Fitzgerald’s
Last but not least, Fitzgerald’s is kinda quiet tonight — there’s something going on called the “Now or Never Spotlight Concert,” but I can’t find out any details as to what it actually is — but you can still head up there to rock (and, um, funk?) out with promising-sounding locals {Only Beast}, about whom I’ve heard plenty of good things, especially live, and they of the baddest-ass band name ever, {Devil Killing Moth}. Do it, y’all.

Runners-Up:
Finding Reason/Morgue City/The Freakouts/Love Knife @ Rudyard’s
Shock Your Face Off Showcase, featuring The Underlying Factor, The Minx Delilah, Sins of the Sinless, Wake the Day, Karma Points, Vesseles Out To Sea, Lillytrip Voyages, The Aftershow, SharkBiteTrey, Matt Champion, & The Aftervibe @ Dean’s/Notsuoh
Sister 7 (reunion!)/Zwee/Liviya Compean @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar
Swank Disco, featuring Ceeplus Bad Knives, Mr. Castillo, & Cookie Tu Sweet @ Grand Prize Bar
Mike Stinson/Amanda Jo Cevallos/Little Joe Washington @ The Continental Club
Lab 5555, featuring The Octanes @ Houston Museum of Natural Science (8-11PM)
