(UPDATED) Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Willie Nelson + SXSW Overflow + More

UPDATE: Alright, so now for a bit more embarrassment…apparently the Ian Moore/{Jealous Creatures} show was last night, not tonight. Sorry, folks — I’m apparently so stressed this weekend I’ve got no idea which day’s which…

Dang. It isn’t often, lately, that I end up writing up what all’s going on on a freaking Sunday, but here we are, and tonight, March 10th, is looking pretty good. A lot of things are ongoing already, unfortunately — and it kills me that I blew mentioning the {Jandek} show earlier tonight at St. Paul’s Methodist Church — but hey, you’ve still got time to catch some good shows.

A bit of redfaced embarrassment, btw: for some damn reason, I had the Andrew W.K. show over at Boondocks on the Shows list as being tonight. And, um, it isn’t; it’s actually Tuesday night, March 12th. Fuck. (And, yeah, it’s already sold out, which probably sucks more.) Sorry for the confusion, everybody — I honestly have no idea how that happened.

Anyway, here’s what’s actually going on tonight:

Ian Moore & the Lossy Coils/Jealous Creatures @ The Continental Club
Arrrrrgggghh. If I weren’t frantically packing and trying to get about a billion last-minute things done, dammit, this is where I’d be; not only is one of my absolute-favorite H-town bands, {Jealous Creatures} playing (right now, possibly), doing their out-Western indie-rock is what is probably the perfect venue for them for (I think?) the very first stime, but Ian Moore is a longtime fave of my wife’s, and she became surprisingly depressed when I told her he was playing in town on a night when we couldn’t possibly make it out. sigh.

Willie Nelson @ Arena Theater
And then there’s Willie Nelson over at the Arena Theater. If you don’t at least know who this guy is, you need to move to a different damn state, and while I get that he’s not necessarily everybody’s cup of tea, he’s still a hell of a songwriter & performer. I’ve seen him twice now, including last year at Summerfest, and he was mesmerizing both times (although a bit more “on” last summer, I’ve gotta admit). Hell, whether you know who the Red-Headed Stranger is or not, odds are good you know his songs.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Deathrow Tull, The Nuclears, Cheers Elephant, DRGN KING, The Bottom Dollars, Small Houses, Chateau Nowhere, Grown Up Avenger Stuff, Walking Shapes, New Sweden, & Roomrunner @ Super Happy Fun Land
Still working on this one, I’m afraid, but I’ll try to get at least a few more writeups up soon. Even without listening to me, though, you should just bite the bullet & get the hell up to Super Happy Fun Land; the bands I have listened to so far tonight are all pretty damn great, and hey, band roulette is awesome. Give it a shot.

Runners-Up:
KPFT Radio 43rd Birthday Party, featuring Uncle Lucius, The Carper Family, The Mastersons, Lisa Morales, Patrice Pike, Matt Harlan, & Craig Kinsey & Friends @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (12PM; $20)
Alt-J/Hundred Waters/The Weeks @ Fitzgerald’s (sold out!)
The Subsonics/Tiger Tiger @ Avant Garden
AR*V SXSpillover, featuring Pan, Dear Blanca, Only Beast, Cancellieri, & Perhaps @ Dean’s
New Politics/Another Run/Theory of Thieves @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake)

Also, I think that Ian Moore show was last night, not tonight. I missed it too, and would’ve liked to have gone.

You’re kidding…holy freaking crap, you’re right. Man, I am apparently losing my freaking mind. :( Thanks for the correction, Charlie…
