Tomorrow Night: Help Out Lucas Gorham of Grandfather Child

4679567418_7ddc056445I’ve gotten info about a bunch of different benefit-type shows lately, and while I fully intend to post about all of ’em at some point, this one really grabbed hold of me, in large part because it’s a benefit for awesome, insanely talented cool dude Lucas Gorham, a mainstay of the Houston scene and the slide guitar-shredding frontman of blues-soul-rockers {Grandfather Child}.

Apparently Lucas got in a fairly serious bicycle accident a few weeks ago, and while he’s thankfully on the mend, well, those medical bills just pile up higher & higher, and Lucas’s day job teaching kids music over at Nameless Sound doesn’t have health insurance. So he’s stuck, well and truly.

Or maybe not. See, a bunch of Lucas’s friends — led by The Convoy Group main man Mark C. Austin, I think — are throwing a benefit show for him tomorrow night, on Sunday, February 10th, up at Fitzgerald’s.

They’re calling it “With A Little Help From My Friends,” and they’ve gathered up a holy-crap-that-rules slate of musicians and bands who are willing to help out, including psych-pop gang {Featherface}, Sergio Trevino of roots-folk-rock outfit {Buxton}, Taylor Lee & Sara Van Buskirk of {Finnegan} (and this may be Van Buskirk’s first show in something like a year, FYI, but don’t quote me on that one), Mike & Austin of garage-punk ragers Mikey & The Drags, melancholy rootsy people {Second Lovers}, ska/reggae supergroup {The Suffers}, Justin Nava from {the last place you look}, soulful psych-rock heroes {The Tontons}, and {Pleasure Shapes} (who I still need to hear but who I’m told are great), for a few.

Here’s the full schedule, as of right now:

    500 DJ Meshak
    530 Taylor Lee and {Sara Van Buskirk} ({Finnegan})
    600 Sergio Trevino ({Buxton})
    630 {The Tontons}
    700 {Second Lovers}
    730 {Featherface}
    800 Justin Nava ({the last place you look})
    830 {Pleasure Shapes}
    900 Mike & Austin (Mikey & The Drags)
    930 Will Van Horn ({Robert Ellis})
    1000 Kelly Doyle Trio
    1030 {The Suffers}
    1100 {Grandfather Child}
    1130 {Black Congress} (electronics set)

Of course, there’ll be plenty of cheap drinks on hand, plus some cool-sounding raffle prizes from IKEA and Rockin’ Robin, among others. The minimum donation to see the show is $10, but hell, you can donate however much beyond that you want. You don’t actually have to get out to the show to help Lucas, mind you — if you want to donate, just go to https://www.stubwire.com/event/withalittlehelpfrommyfriendsacharityconcertbenefitinglucasgorham/fitzgeralds/houston/4755/ and buy a ticket online, regardless of whether or not you can make it up to Fitz…

Anyway, that’s the deal. Like I said above, Lucas is a good dude, a genuinely nice, down-to-earth, ridiculously talented guy who spends his days either making great music or teaching kids how to play experimental music; help him out however you can.
