Yr. Weekend, Pt. 4: Warped Tour + Featherface + Square and Compass + Trout Fishing in America + Deer Vibes + More

Last day of the weekend, Sunday, July 1st, and yep, there’s still some good things happening. First, though, just as an FYI, the Corey Smith show set for tonight at the House of Blues has been cancelled, since Smith had to undergo emergency appendicitis surgery on 6/29; hopefully he’s recovering okay.

As for what is going on, here we go:

Vans Warped Tour ’12, featuring A Loss For Words, After The Burial, All Time Low, Anthony Raneri, Anti-Flag, Ballyhoo!, Bayside, blessthefall, Born Of Osiris, Breathe Carolina, Brian Marquis, Champagne Champagne, Chelsea Grin, Chunk! No Captain Chunk!, Cold Forty Three, Dead Sara, Divided By Friday, Echo Movement, Every Time I Die, Falling In Reverse, Fireworks, For Today, Four Year Strong, Funeral Party, G-Eazy, Hyro Da Hero, I Am The Avalanche, I Fight Dragons, Impending Doom, Into It. Over It., IT BOYS!, iwrestledabearonce, Koji, Living With Lions, Make Do And Mend, Man Overboard, Matt Toka, Mayday Parade, Memphis May Fire, Miss May I, Mod Sun, Motionless In White, Neo Geo, New Found Glory, Of Mice And Men, Pierce The Veil, Polar Bear Club, Rise To Remain, Senses Fail, Skinny Lister, Skip The Foreplay, Sleeping With Sirens, Stepdad, Streetlight Manifesto, T. Mills, Taking Back Sunday, Taylor Thrash, Ten Second Epic, The Constellations, The Ghost Inside, The Green, The Jukebox Romantics, The Silver Comet, The Used, Title Fight, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, Tonight Alive, Tony D’Angelo, Transit, Vampires Everywhere!, Vanna, Vinnie Caruana, We Are The In Crowd, We Are The Ocean, We The Kings, Wick-It The Instigator, Yellowcard, You Me At Six, Young London, Belle Manoir, Dear You, A Midnight in Chicago, The Mid-Summer Classic, & more @ Reliant Park
Yeah, this is the biggie of the day/night, to be sure. I’ve got to admit that I’m sorely, painfully out-of-touch with a lot of these bands, but I do like some of ’em definitely — Taking Back Sunday, Streetlight Manifesto (are they seriously still together? I had no idea…), Senses Fail are always great, I freaking love Anti-Flag, and what I’ve heard of Memphis May Fire, Bayside, and Yellowcard isn’t bad, either. If you’re a fan of all those post-emo/screamo-type bands, this is most likely where you already are. No clue on how things are going with the rain, but hopefully all’s well out there at Reliant Park.

Deer Vibes/Featherface/Square and Compass/Gospel and the Wolf/Branagan @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor)
A little smaller-scale, but equally cool (if a bit jumbled, style-wise), this show includes two of H-town’s best bands at the moment, {Featherface} & {Square and Compass}. The former do an awesome, addictive kind of fuzzed-out, proggy psych-pop, and the latter do a seriously Braid-like, old-school style of emo-core, and both were highlights of this year’s Free Press Summerfest for me. As for the headliners, Deer Vibes, the little bit I’ve heard of the orchestral indie-pop music so far was pretty neat, so make sure you stick around ’til they play.

Trout Fishing in America @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck
I missed out on posting about Trout Fishing in America‘s daytime kids’ show, unfortunately, but they’ve still got the 6PM show coming up, and it should be cool for adults or children. I saw this band a handful of times many, many years now and fell head-over-heels for ’em, but sadly have yet to be able to arrange things so I can take our 8-year-old to see ’em (the 2-year-old’s still a little too feral). One of these days, though, it’s gotta happen, because I think she’s truly going to love the band’s combination of goofy & serious folk-y songs, not to mention the goofy banter between Keith Grimwood & Ezra Idlet

Runners-Up:
The Texas Buzz, featuring Positive Disturbance, American Fangs, & Glass The Sky @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake)
Delorean/Nino Gotti & Why Jae/Eskabel/H.I.S.D./MC Kane/DJ Candlestick @ Warehouse Live (Studio)
La Sardina de Naiguata @ Miller Outdoor Theatre (free!)
