Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: The English Beat + Satin Hooks + The Wrong Ones + Super Robot Party + More
Gotta keep this brief, but there is some cool stuff going on tonight, Friday, June 15th. Here goes:
The English Beat/The Romantics @ Fitzgerald’s
Yes, yes, yes. Granted, I know this version of The English Beat is pretty much frontman Dave Wakeling (which is known as the “US” English Beat, apparently, if that isn’t confusing as fuck) and a bunch of musicians who weren’t around for the original incarnation, but the hell with it — it’s still cool as shit that the band behind “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Ranking Full Stop” is touring and playing and whatnot, whatever the format.
Space Villains/Satin Hooks/Say, Girl, Say @ Fitzgerald’s
Niiiice. It’s been far, far too long since I saw Satin Hooks play live (opening for The Stills, maybe? Yeowch…), and that’s a damn shame, because they’re a pretty great band, one of a handful of straight-up alternarock-ish bands around town that I like quite a bit. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure the band was still around, since (ex-?)member Lucas Gorham went on to form Grandfather Child, but apparently main guy Kerry is still going strong. Glad to see it.
The Risin Sun/Rebel Beach/The Wrong Ones @ Mango’s
Dunno most of the folks playing here, but The Wrong Ones are always, always fun, with their grimy, street-punk-tinged glam-rock thing going on. Hell, I thought I’d heard somewhere that they’d already been banned from Mango’s — while I’m glad to see that’s not the case, it makes me want to witness any kind of spectacle that could’ve gotten ‘em banned in the first place, y’know?
Super Robot Party/Bipolar Gentlemen/PuraPharm @ Rudyard’s
Mentioned it before on this here blog, but it bears mentioning again: I’ve yet to hear Super Robot Party, but I need to, considering that the band includes ex-members of MYTWILIGHTPILOT, an extremely cool, underrated band from back when I used to do the band thing myself. What I’ve heard is somewhat old-school GBV-like, and that’s no bad thing…

The Fake Boys/The Ballistics/Spastic Fit @ East Side Social Center (4202 Canal; $5)
Ian Moore @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck
