Yr. Weekend, Pt. 1: ZenHill Night + George Clinton + SXSW Overflow + Folk Family Revival + More

Yep, it’s Friday, March 9th, heading into the weekend — a little late, I know, but heck, there’s plenty still going on. Here goes:

ZenHill Night, featuring Roky Moon & BOLT!, Sideshow Tramps, The Wheel Workers, Winter Wallace, Craig Kinsey, & Southern Backtones @ Fitzgerald’s
Already talked about this one, yeah, but it’s worth repeating — tonight’s ZenHill Records Night at Fitz is bound to be pretty stellar. I really, truly love Roky Moon & BOLT! in all their glam-rock-opera glory, {The Sideshow Tramps}‘ shambling, raucous gypsy caravan, and the {Southern Backtones}‘ murky, sexy Western-Goth rock, in particular, and I like {The Wheel Workers} and {Winter Wallace} quite a bit, as well. Go party down & celebrate one of the best labels in town…

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic @ House of Blues
My first thought when I saw this show on the calendar was, honestly, “um, really?” From what I’d heard, the last time George Clinton and P-Funk played the House of Blues, reports were that the HoB staff shut the show down promptly at midnight, even though Clinton & crew were still playing at the time. But hey, bygones, eh? Either way, it always does my soul good to see P-Funk on the bill somewhere after all this time — they really, truly are legends.

SXSW Overflow Fest, fe aturing Sphynx, Galaxy Express, & Les Racquet @ Super Happy Fun Land
Talked about this one already, too; again, well worth checking out, especially Austin-bred electro-pop outfit Sphynx. Stop on in and check ’em out…

Zach Walther Band/Folk Family Revival @ Firehouse Saloon
No clue on the Zach Walther Band, but hey, I’m psyched as hell to see Magnolia-dwellers {Folk Family Revival} down inside the Loop, for once. The quartet came out with one of the best albums I heard all last year, and they play raw-edged, open-hearted roots-rock like a band 20 years older, seriously.
