Summerfest 2012 Lineup Now Online

Yep, folks, that much-anticipated moment is finally upon us: the folks behind the Free Press Summerfest have released the official lineup for this year’s festival, which’ll be taking place this coming June 2nd & 3rd at the ever-cool Eleanor Tinsley Park.

Hard as it is to believe, despite the relatively short time Summerfest has been around (although four years is an eternity in Houston-time), it’s become pretty much the musical event of the year, at least for me. I’ve been seriously, seriously looking forward to finding out who all will be playing.

And yeah, it looks pretty dang good. I’ll admit that there’s not one big, big headliner that makes me go, “wha?…holy crap, they’re playing?”, but it’s good, good pile, nonetheless. Weirdly, there seem to be a lot of “The” bands this year, meaning bands whose names are “[SOMETHING] The [SOMETHING ELSE],” but eh, I’m not going to take that as a bad sign, just a painful trend in band names in general.

High points, for me: Fatal Flying Guilloteens (holy shit — seriously?), Descendents, Ume, Diplo, Willie(!), Robert Ellis (duh), The Flaming Lips (doing The Dark Side of the Moon; hell, yes), Girl In A Coma, The Riff Tiffs (reunion or one-off? fingers crossed for the former), Quiet Company, Featherface (maybe I’ll finally get to see this band live), Square and Compass (ditto), The Sour Notes, The Small Sounds, Primus (who I haven’t seen in about a decade now), Best Coast, Papermoons (yay!), and yes, Morris Day and The Motherfucking Time. No, you didn’t read that last one wrong. Now, how cool would it be if The Purple One Himself turned out to be a late-addition headliner, and he & Morris Day had a real-live onstage funk-off? (Answer: insanely awesome, that’s what it’d be.)

I’m sure it’ll change as we get closer to the date, but for now, at least, here’s the list:

There you go; more info on the ‘fest as we get it, y’all…
