Yr. Weekend (All of It, Right Now): New York City Queens + georgia’s Horse. + Seahaven + American Sharks + Billy Milano + Requieum for Hoff + More

Yeowch. Okay, so I’m afraid yours truly will be elsewhere this weekend, which kind of sucks, because there’s a lot of great stuff going on, and I reall, really, really wish I was going to be here for some of it, at least. But hey, you don’t need to miss out, right?

Unfortunately, I don’t have time to do any kind of rundown on all the cool shows, so this is going to be pretty much a list of allllll the shows I think look good over the next few days — here goes:

Thurs., February 23:
Ringo Deathstarr/New York City Queens/Featherface/Olajuwon @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor)
A sweet lineup, I have to say; saw Ringo Deathstarr a few years back and was pretty surprised at how good they were/are, and then there’s {Featherface}, who are honestly one of my favorite bands in town right now. Then there’s {New York City Queens}, whose debut album I’ve been enjoying the heck out of this week — it’s seriously great. I’ve heard {Olajuwon} (who used to be called tigerparty, I believe) are pretty good, too.

Reptar/Quiet Hooves @ Fitzgerald’s
Talked about this one a bit already, but dangit, it’s worth mentioning again; Reptar are badass. Seriously.

Cloud Nothings/A Classic Education/The Boxing Lesson @ Fitzgerald’s
T Bird & The Breaks/Poor Pilate/B L A C K I E @ The Continental Club
Occupy Yer Evening Gown, featuring Days N’ Daze, Disfrutalo!, & Ancient Astronaut @ Mango’s
Hightailers/Devil Killing Moth @ Last Concert Cafe
Dunebuggy Attack Battalion/Cosmic Bug Loaf/Cozy Blankets @ The Mink

Fri., February 24:
Tiziano Dominico/georgia’s Horse./Sara Van Buskirk @ Rudyard’s
Ah, this one kills me. I’ve been meaning to catch {Tiziano Dominico} for a little while now, and I really need to see {Sara Van Buskirk} live — 2010’s The Place Where You Are is excellent. But I have to say, it’s the mercurial, there-and-gone-again georgia’s Horse. that’s the real draw, at least for me; I interviewed Teresa Maldonado, the one-woman band behind the moniker, a few years ago, hoping to get some sort of glimpse into where that dark, murky, folky, strangely beautiful music really came from, and no, I still don’t really know for sure. Glad to see she’s playing again, either way.

Man Overboard/Handguns/Seahaven/Candy Hearts @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor)
A cool, cool slate of post-hardcore rock, including Man Overboard, about whom I’ve heard good things, and L.A. band Seahaven, whose new album Winter Forever is excellent in a hard-to-pigeonhole kind of way. Think Jawbreaker-esque bitter guitar rock, and you’ll be on the right track…

Voodoo Glow Skulls/Authority Zero/Skyfox @ Fitzgerald’s
White Ghost Shivers @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck
TAO: The Art of the Drum @ Brown Theater (Wortham Center)
Changoman/Bombasta/Umbrella Man/Little Joe Washingon @ The Continental Club
D.R.U.M./Bigga Starr/Jimmy Lee Deen @ Last Concert Cafe
Driver Friendly/Zlam Dunk/Hello Chief/Fingers Crossed @ Fitzgerald’s
Jesse Dayton @ Goode’s Armadillo Palace

Sat., February 25:
American Sharks (7″ release)/Psychic Palms/Bang Bangz/Roky Moon DJ @ Fitzgerald’s
sigh. Another excellent lineup — I was afraid {American Sharks} were dead & gone ’til recently, what with Roky Moon & BOLT taking up most of frontman Mike Hardin‘s time, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. What I’ve heard of the band’s new WEEDWIZARD 7″ is a hell of a lot of fun, a big slab of stomping, noisy, sludgy rawk-ness, and hey, they’re dragging {Tax the Wolf} spinoff trio {Bang Bangz} along with ’em, and that’s never a bad thing.

“Sing Your Life” Acoustic Showcase, featuring Dwight Taylor Lee (Finnegan/Literary Greats), Dylan Bryson, Frank Freeman, Amanda Tankersley (Day Sailor), Brandon Elam (Literary Greats), Gilbert Alfaro (Spain Colored Orange), Kylie Chrisman, Zeek Garcia, Trey Miller, The Fox Derby, Sarah Hirsch (Jealous Creatures), Jason Long, & more @ The Big Top
Aww, cool. Your favorite local rock/folk/pop people, all playing their best stuff acoustically; hopefully somebody’ll film this, maybe, so I can watch it later on? Please?

Harold Borup (EP release)/Moths/Disfrutalo! @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor)
Okay, so I haven’t yet gotten a chance to hear {Harold Borup}, but hey, what can I say? Anybody who titles their EP What the Fuck Is Dubstep? gets a smirking thumbs-up from me. (And yeah, I’m guilty; I like dubstep, too. Can’t take yourself too seriously, though, right?)

A Night of Punk Comedy + Road Stories, featuring JT Habersaat, Billy Milano, Mike Weibe, & Mack Lindsay @ Mango’s
Wha? Whoa. I really, truly had no idea Billy Milano, of hardcore icons M.O.D., is now doing some kind of standup-type thing. No clue if it’s actually funny, but hey, he always seemed like he’d be a cool guy to chat with.

Vinyl Junkie P.A. Fundraiser, featuring Will to Live, Fingers Crossed, The Tempest, Band of Mercy, H.R.A., Cast Away, Gain, Last 2 Weeks, Mindboil, Altered Minds, No Nuts No Glory, On Track, Stand Tall, & Short Circuit (2:30PM-12AM; $7)
Adelaine @ Satellite Room (11124 Cypress N.)
Down Fi/Chelsea Hotel/Dead Roses @ Rudyard’s
Screwtape/Cocker Spaniels/Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man/Hollywood FLOSS/T.H.E.M. @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar
Bang Bangz @ Cactus Music (3PM)
Polica/Marijuana Deathsquads/Total Fucking Blood @ Fitzgerald’s
New York City Queens/The Warplanes @ Heights Vinyl (6-9:30PM; free!)
Fire in the Kitchen/Jimmy Lee Deen @ Last Concert Cafe
Screwtape @ Cactus Music (1PM)
Body CTRL, featuring Ceeplus Bad Knives, Mr. Castillo, Bobby DJ, & Calero @ Avant Garden

Sun., February 26:
Requiem for Aaron Hoffower, featuring A Thousand Cranes @ Avant Garden
Damn. This is one type of show I never like to hear about; apparently back at the end of last month, local H-town artist Aaron “Hoff” Hoffower passed away, and his bandmates in {A Thousand Cranes} are playing this show to honor his memory. Come out and pay your respects. Sorry to hear about your loss, ATC folks…

H-Town Minicon, featuring Attic Ted, Automatonic (Perseph One & Psychopomp), & more @ The Jenner House (1619 Chapman; 6PM-12AM)
This one’s not strictly a “music”-type show, but heck, there’re bands playing — including Automatonic, which is apparently a new project with {Perseph One} & somebody named Psychopomp — so I figure it counts. Besides, the H-Town Minicon is all about various types of zines & comics, all sorts of neat, low-key, ultra-indie print stuff.

The Handshake/Wild Child/Prairie Cadets @ Fitzgerald’s
The Big Squeeze, featuring a whole bunch of accordion players @ Cactus Music (3-4PM)
A$AP Rocky/OG Ron C/DJ Mr. Rogers @ Warehouse Live
Gomez/Hey Rosetta! @ Fitzgerald’s

That’s all I can do right now, y’all; have a good one…
