Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Guilt Party + Dufay Collective + Winds of Plague + More

Getting a little bit more of a jump on things for tonight, Sunday, December 11th, and there’s still some good stuff going on, don’t worry. Here’s what I think looks good:

Power Trip/RZL DZL/Back To Back/Guilt Party @ Mango’s ($5)
Alright, so I’ll freely admit I dunno a thing about headliners RZL DZL or Power Trip, sorry, but H-towners {Guilt Party} have emerged as one of the most hotly-anticipated new bands ’round town these past couple of months. And from what I’ve heard, that anticipation’s definitely warranted — what I’ve heard so far is raw, ferocious, thrash-tinged hardcore of the best kind possible, and I’m glad to see the band’s playing more shows for those (like me) who missed their debut at the Montrose Winter Social.

Dufay Collective @ Christ Church Cathedral (1117 Texas; 5PM)
Of course, if you’re a little more on the “cultured” side of things, there’s always the Dufay Collective performing at Christ Church Cathedral downtown. It’s put on by the Houston Early Music group, and apparently the Collective will be playing a Christmas concert of sorts…it’s just that this’ll be the Christmas concert heard by, say, Renaissance-era audiences in England, including a song written by(?) Henry VIII. Personally, I find that sort of thing fascinating, but hey, I’m a music nerd. And I can’t resist any concert that features a freaking hurdy-gurdy. Just weird like that.

Winds of Plague/Chelsea Grin/As Blood Runs Black/For the Fallen Dreams/Upon a Burning Body/In the Midst of Lions/Like Moths to Flames/Volumes @ Warehouse Live
And now, back to the loud. I’ve heard promising things about insanely-tattooed deathcore dudes Winds of Plague, and I’ve heard similarly-good things about San Antonians Upon A Burning Body and Ohio’s Like Moths to Flames, not to mention L.A.-dwellers Volumes. No locals, looks like — none that I know, anyway — but this still promises to be an ear-destroying blast of ultra-loud metalcore.

Runners-Up:
Bizarre Holiday on Main Street, featuring The Footnotes, Monkey, Light Rock Express, Thrill, & more @ 900 Winbern Street (12-6PM)
The Texas Buzz, featuring The Last Hour, Fuska, & Sundown Audio @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake)
Tomball German Christmas Market, featuring Alpenfest, Chris Rybak Band, Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express Trio, Sheila Lee and Friends, Armstrong Family Carolers, Clown Jewels of Arabia Shrine Circus, TubaMeisters, 3rd Generation Band, Rathkamp German Dancers, Class Act Stars, Dana Kelly, Elves, Gene Hackemack, Our Savior Lutheran Bell Choir, Sinterklaas, & Tannenbaum @ Old Town Tomball (Tomball)
