Sedition Books Moving! To…Nowhere?

I have to say, I’ve been a fan of Sedition Books since they first started up a few years back; although I don’t live in the Montrose ‘hood anymore and can’t get over to the store real often, the folks I’ve talked to from there are goodhearted, smart people who obviously do what they’re doing because they love it and because it’s necessary.

In a town where sources of news and information seem to get crushed down further and further into one bland, monotonous stream day-by-day, the Sedition “Infoshop” is a welcome change. I may not be on-board with all of the stuff they espouse, no, but they stock some interesting stuff you can’t find anywhere else in this city.

Sadly, things aren’t looking so rosy over there at the moment. Last week the SB crew announced via Facebook that they would be moving from their current space at 901 Richmond, which they’ve outgrown, into a much larger space at 1401 Sterrett St. that would let them better hold events, concerts, etc.

Great news, right? I mean, Sterrett St.’s a little more out-of-the-way, sure, but bigger sure seems to be better, in this case, and the old store is pretty teeny-tiny. They’ve got some ideas for branching out and expanding, all of which sound pretty good:

With the move will come some other changes. We’re going to focus more on radical events and radical social space, and our hours may concentrate more on weekends. Another large change that has been considered throughout the years and is finally here will be a name change. We want to keep the “Sedition Library,” but with a broader focus on event space and fostering radical community, we want a broader name, so don’t be startled if another name pops up in the next newsletter. That said if you have any suggestions or feelings on the name change please let us know!

So, to get ready for a December 1st move-in date, they’ve declared a month-long sale at the Richmond location, with everything between 20% and 75% off, and they’re organizing a “Packing Party” on Nov. 26-27. Great! Good. Happy to see it.

Except…(yeah, you knew it was coming, didn’t you?) Okay, so this week the SB folks come back with the news that the landlord who owns 1401 Sterrett has changed their mind and now doesn’t want to rent out the space to them, “feeling that our events might be bigger than he’d like.” Seriously? We’re talking about an anarchist collective in Houston putting on a handful of folk-punk shows, for crying out loud; they’re not setting up for the Warped Tour.

Whatever the landlord’s reasoning, this means the Sedition-ers are officially up a creek without a paddle and are currently looking for a new new home to call their own. Anybody got a decent-sized warehouse space they’d care to rent out to a bunch of friendly, kind-hearted vegan anarchists (and not the Black Bloc kind, but the kind who don’t go around breaking shit)? If so, hit ’em up on their Website.

Not sure what’ll happen if they don’t find a new place to go by Dec. 1st, but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that they find something before then…

Hi, I just moved out of a space about 100 feet from where they were going to move in at 1401 Sterrett. I had my workshop/office there for a year until I moved into a barn behind my house. The property manager is a good guy but they’re in the process of trying to figure out what direction to go with the space. Sorry to hear Sedition got caught in the crossfire.

That brings me to my suggestion: have you checked on Canal Street just east of Sterrett? Vinyl Junkie is on Canal, and there’s a couple spaces open in that same building. People are already accustomed to going out there because of Moon Tower plus Vinyl Junkie regularly has punk shows, plus rent is probably cheaper than both Sterrett and Montrose.

Hope it works out for you guys.

Cool — thanks for the info, man, and I’m glad to hear the cancellation wasn’t something specifically directed at them; got my fingers crossed they’ll be able to find something else soon!
