Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Wild Moccasins + listenlisten + Jealous Creatures (Rev’d!) + Art Institute + More

Moving on into Saturday, October 8th, and it’s another busy-ass day, seriously… Some of what’s going on I’ve already mentioned, like the tour kickoff show up at Fitzgerald’s with {The Wild Moccasins}, Little Lo, & {The Mathletes} — see over here for that. It’s gonna be badass, honest.

Then there’s the {Two Star Symphony} thing over at The Orange Show, where the Symphony will be playing in their full 8-person incarnation, doing their score for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; details on that right here.

There’s plenty more, though, like the David Ramirez show up at Rudyard’s — I dunno Ramirez at all, but I do know openers {listenlisten}, who masterfully create these oddly “old”-sounding songs that bridge the gap between Appalachian folk and murky post-rock, and {Sara Van Buskirk}, who’s one of the best singer/songwriters going in this town right now. Seriously; check out her debut album, The Place Where You Are.

Cool Western-haze/indie-rock outfit {Jealous Creatures} is (are?) playing its CD release party at Echo (aka the Jet Lounge) for new album Little Heaven Big Sky, which is pretty damn impressive, I have to say — see the full review here. They’re playing with also-cool, also Western-sounding (albeit more spaghetti Western than lonesome-highway Western) band {The Tyburn Jig}, as well as The Horse & Dagger, who I’m not familiar with at all (sorry)…

Speaking of release parties, neato art-punk band {Art Institute} is playing their own LP release, for new album People Like It When You Fail, tomorrow, too. They’re playing someplace called Saint Joseph’s House at 3307 Austin, and it’s reportedly going to be their last Houston show for quite a while, meaning they won’t be back onstage locally ’til next February, for crying out loud. Catch ’em while you can, eh?

I can’t forget The Continental Club, either — they’ve got an interesting-sounding lineup for Saturday, too, including cool goth-y garage-punks {13 Black Coffins} and countrified dudes Sean Reefer & The Resin Valley Boys, among others.

And hey, then there’s the Mucky Duck, where the legendary Robyn Hitchcock, the man responsible for some of the weirdest pop songs I listened to back in college; this time around, he’s touring with Joe Boyd, which should be very cool. Boyd’s not a musician, apparently, but is a producer, manager, and writer, and he’ll be reading parts of his book, White Bicycles, while Hitchcock plays.
