Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: BestFest + Dig Dug + Elliot’s B-Day + Binarium + Wine Fest + More

Sunday coming up — September 25th, to be precise — and somewhat surprisingly, it’s pretty damn busy, at least for a Sunday…

Of course, tomorrow night’s the second day of the still-cool Houston Press BestFest, and I’m feeling pretty dumb, actually, because I talked about Cake playing tonight when they’re actually headlining, um, tomorrow night. Sorry ’bout that, folks.

Anyway, tomorrow’s BestFest sounds pretty great, with awesome indie-folk-rock guys {Buxton} playing alongside blues heroine Carolyn Wonderland, great indie-pop kids {The Wild Moccasins}, ska dudes Ryan Scroggins & the Trenchtown Texans, & the trio of Craig Kinsey ({The Sideshow Tramps}), Hank Schyma ({Southern Backtones}), & {John Evans}, playing together as the Honky Tonk Blood Brothers. I’ve been wrapped up a bit with the 2-year-old’s birthday insanity, so I haven’t heard much about what today/tonight was like, but hey, with that lineup there’s not much to complain about, in my book.

Now, that’s definitely not all that’s on, and some of the rest sounds pretty awesome, too. Like, say, the resurrected {Dig Dug} playing at Vinyl Junkie — I freaking loved this verging-on-emo pop-punk trio back in my post-college days and was crushed when they splintered apart and then moved off to California, of all places. I’m assuming this rise from the dead is only temporary, but hell, I’d love to see ’em back together again for a good long while, myself.

Tomorrow is also apparetly the birthday of somebody named Elliot, and there’s a birthday shindig going off at 1601 Castle Ct. from 2-9PM to celebrate. I dunno the guy, sorry, but he’s got some very cool bands playing for their day-o’-birth, including glam-rockers Roky Moon & BOLT!, badass country-folk rockers {Finnegan}, electronic experimentalists {LIMB}. From the flyer, the folks throwing this sound pretty welcoming, but just remember, y’all: this is a house party. Don’t be a dick.

On the stranger side of things, music-wise, you can check out the latest installment of the Binarium Sound Series, which includes a collaboration between Arizonan Steve Jansen and local boy {Charlie Naked}, a set by Austinite Brent Farris, & the trio of Sandy Ewen, Denis Cisneros, & Jonathan Horne. I’ve seen/heard some of these folks in various combinations in the past, and while I can’t claim to have any idea what it’ll sound like, it’s guaranteed to be interesting…

Lastly, there’s Day 2 of the Houston Wine Fest; I’m not big on wine, honestly, but they’ve got some cool bands playing, like {AThousandColours}, {Second Lovers}, {Yello Echo}, & Austin funk/soul outfit Soul Track Mind. Whether you like the vino or not, it’s worth checking out.
