Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Two Star Symphony + Co-Pilot + The Small Sounds + Square and Compass + White Linen + More

Holy crap, is there a lot going on tomorrow, Saturday, August 6th; there’s so much good stuff happening that I can’t entirely keep track of it, honestly… I’m gonna have to blaze through it somewhat, but that’s kinda-sorta okay, since I’ve already talked about some of it here on the blog.

The Two Star Symphony CD release, for their new album Titus Andronicus, which happens to be pretty badass and creepy as hell, simultaneously. That’s over at the Divergence Music & Arts space inside Spring Street Studios — see here for details, and check out the full review over here.

At The Mink, there’s an awesome lineup of bands playing, headed up by H-town’s own spacerock-gone-metal crew Co-Pilot and similarly heavy/atmospheric Austinites The Calm Blue Sea. There’re plenty of other great bands playing, too; head over here for more on that one…

Then there’s the “I Want To See You Go Wild” scavenger hunt after-party at Mango’s, with great, raw indie-rock dudes Muhammad Ali, Iron Curtain shtick act Commie Hilfiger, Clockpole, Ceeplus Bad Knives, and pretty great, Braid-like emo guys {Square and Compass — see the review of the latter’s self-titled debut EP over here. Details on the hunt & subsequent party here.

Beyond those already-mentioned shows, though, there’s plenty more. Over at The Continental Club, one of my absolute favorite roots-rock bands, period, from any city or scene, The Small Sounds, have apparently resurfaced and are going to be blowing the roof off. I’m relieved, seriously; I was halfway afraid that the Sounds guys had drifted apart during their “break” and vanished into the ether. Which would’ve been a damn shame, ’cause they’re excellent.

Up in The Heights, there’s the whole White Linen Night thing, which I can’t claim to know much about — I’d never heard much about it ’til this year, honestly, although it sounds intriguing. (What’s the “white linen” part about, anybody know?) There’re showcases and sets at various points in the ‘hood, including Fitz, which has a fine lineup that includes Benjamin Wesley, Sara Van Buskirk, Another Run, and an acoustic set by heavy emo gang the last place you look. Elsewhere, cool surf-Goth-Western outfit The Tyburn Jig will be playing, as will Runaway Sun & plenty of other folks…

Last but not least, early birds should make a point of hitting Cactus tomorrow at 3PM to catch a probably somewhat-subdued free set by badass glam-rock heroes Roky Moon & BOLT!. I’m going to try to make it out, myself, possibly with midgets in tow.

I wish more people would write sites like this that are actually fun to read. With all the garbage floating around on the net, it is rare to read a site like yours instead.
