Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Kings of Leon Rescheduled + Finnegan + Skate & Rock + Roky Moon & BOLT! + Omotai + Julydoscope + More

Saturday (July 30th, you calendar-less bastards out there) is upon us, and there’s a ton of stuff going on. Before I go into that, though, a bit of bad news: tonight’s show out at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion with Kings of Leon & the wholly-underrated Band of Horses, has been rescheduled. Apparently Kings frontman Caleb Followill was laid low by heat exhaustion & dehydration after last night’s show up in Dallas. (Fuckin’ Dallas, naturally…)

At any rate, concert’s now scheduled for September 22nd out at the CWMP, and their Website says all tickets for the original date will be valid for the later date or can be refunded from wherever you bought ’em.

On to the shows… First on the list is a cool afternoon’s worth of sets at Cactus, with awesome, awesome roots-pop/rock band {Finnegan} playing first, at 1PM (as, um, right now; sorry, spent the AM at the Galleria with the midgets), followed by ever-excellent country troubadour {Robert Ellis} at 3PM. This is an extra-special deal for Ellis, since he just got back from a nationwide tour with Old 97’s and Those Darlins. Mark my words, y’all: there will come a time when even your dumbass cousins will know who this guy is.

Both sets are free, of course, and beverages are provided, as always, by St. Arnold’s. I’m not a beer drinker, personally, but their root beer ain’t bad…

Speaking of tours, btw, get on over to the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark around 7PM this evening to catch the latest installment of the Skate & Rock series, which’ll feature badass pop-punk throwbacks {Something Fierce}, who’ll be heading out shortly themselves on a tour of our fair nation, rolling down the freeways with Cute Lepers. This little gang is smart, sharp-edged, and freaking brilliant when it comes to writing songs, seriously; check out Don’t Be So Cruel for proof.

Plus, they’re playing with Darwin’s Finches, whom I’m liking more & more, and old-old-old-school punk/noise guys {Anarchitex}, who I always meant to see back in the day but never caught. And hey, it’s punk rock at a skate park; can anything be cooler than that?

Okay, okay, it’s actually a tough fight for the Coolest Show Going crown tonight, I’ll admit it. I already posted a little while back about tonight’s Roky Moon & BOLT! album release up at Fitz (which also includes {sIngs}, {Fat Tony}, {listenlisten}, {Tax the Wolf}, and {Young Girls}, among others), but I’d like to reiterate that this show will be fucking incredible. That’s a guarantee, right there; there is no way it can’t be awesome. See here for my review of great, great new full-length American Honey.

I’m very, very torn, though, ’cause there’s a lot of competition. Over at The Mink, for one thing, crush-your-skull doom-metallers {Omotai} will be demolishing Midtown, opening for Dark Castle, about whom I’ve heard good things, and YOB, about whom I’ve, um, heard nada. (Sorry.)

Then there’s the cool Julydoscope show over at Discovery Green this afternoon/evening, which’ll include experimental musician {Chris Becker} and ultra-mellow, mystical rocker {Tyagaraja}. And on up in the Heights at Dan Electro’s, there’s the Texas Harmonica Festival, featuring a ton of supremely-talented harmonica players.

At the Mucky Duck, longtime country-folk duo {Sisters Morales} are playing their last-ever(!) show as a pair — they’ll be going their own solo ways after this — and Marc Brubaker‘s hosting a shindig at his(?) house at 834 Majestic he’s calling Family/Friends New Music Episode 1, which’ll include new band {Via Cavour} (haven’t heard ’em yet, but they’re all members of The Nautical Mile, {The Ride Home}, & {Hollywood Black}, all of whom I like), {Buxton} frontman Sergio Trevino, {Gretchen Schmaltz}‘s {Frants} project, and Bru’s own {Prairie Cadets}. phew.

Oh, and a little further afield, down at Stafford Centre (in Stafford; duh), today’s the 2nd Annual Mana I Ka Hula Traditional Chant and Hula Competition. No idea who’s performing, but it sounds pretty neat nonetheless.

That’s all my fingers can type right now. Here’s the full, full list:
