Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Zine Fest + Wanda Jackson + Telekinesis (MP3!) + Portugal. The Man + Skate & Rock + More

Holy crap, is there a lot going on today (Saturday, May 21st). What, didn’t y’all get the memo not to make any plans? Eh; I’ll be partying on no matter what happens, so y’know…

First & foremost on my mind, naturally, is this year’s Zine Fest Houston, although it’s less because of the music — although that part’s pretty neat, too — and more because of the focus of the get-together as a whole. Check out what I posted about the Fest this past week…

I’ve been digging back through my own pile of zines the past week or so (finally adding some of the new(-er) ones to the Zines page), and dammit, I still love this stuff. Go, check it out, look at the various tables, attend the panel if you can, and see what all’s going on with zines and zine-type things in our fair city, eh?

Of course, there’s plenty of more full-on musical stuff, like the double-header going on up at Fitzgerald’s; on one floor, they’ve got rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson — who still has sky-high hair and headlining, playing with the nearly-as-awesome Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs for a floor full of garage-y, boogie-ish goodness.

On the other, there’s trippy, swooning indie-rock oddballs Portugal. The Man, who sound (to me, at least) like The New Pornographers playing with The Polyphonic Spree, only with more of a prog-rock fetish than either of those two bands. There’s also Seattleites Telekinesis (who’ve apparently dropped the exclamation point, which makes me a little bummed), who I’ve liked for quite a while now, and whose latest, 12 Desperate Straight Lines, is easily as good as almost anything the shimmery, bouncy indie-pop crew have come up with ’til now. (Nothing quite beats the gleeful fuzz of “Coast of Carolina,” honestly.)

Check out a track from that album:

Over at The Continental Club, there’s another good one, with Austinites Amplified Heat — who I like, and whose new album, On The Hunt, I seriously need to get on the stereo — and The Happen-Ins & The Ripe. Then, over at Rudz, there’s a b-day party for somebody named Erin, which features local rockers {Another Run} & {Born Again Virgins}, both of whom are damn cool. And hey, that one’s free, which is never a bad thing…

Cracked pop(?)sters {PAPAYA} are playing this evening at the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark, as part of the park’s Skate & Rock concert series, and they’re encouraging any & all show-goers to bring all their “holy books” with them as some kind of tongue-in-cheek jab at the whole Rapture thing. They’re playing with {Satin Hooks}, who’re very cool, and {The Octanes}, too.

Last but not least, the 25th Annual Texas Crawfish & Music Festival is still rolling on down up Old Town Spring. Today’s lineup is particularly cool, with Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers & Jesse Dayton; definitely worth the drive up to the North side, I’d say.
