Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: Something Fierce + Young Girls + Gold Sounds + Illegal Wiretaps + French Horn Rebellion (MP3!) + More

Dammit, dammit, dammit. I’d thought I was going to get the drop on Saturday, April 23rd, and get this thing posted last night, but then the Gods of the Internet intervened and took me completely offline for the rest of the evening. Argh.

At any rate, better late than never, right? But not too late, which is good, because this afternoon/early evening promises to be pretty damn cool over at Cactus.

At 3PM, it’s the triumphant return of {Something Fierce} from their recent tour in support of Don’t Be So Cruel (which is incredible, btw). The band was also featured recently on the MAXIMUMROCKNROLL blog, to boot, as their “Record and Video of the Week,” something that’s very cool to see.

They’re followed by indie-fuzz-pop outfit {Young Girls}, who recently sent their self-titled full-length our way; I’ve gotten to listen to it once or twice so far, and I’m liking it quite a bit. They go on at 5PM. Jessica Lea Mayfield was supposed to be playing Cactus today, as well, at 1PM, but that show’s been cancelled — Austin’s Will Taylor & Strings Attached are playing, instead.

Moving to the later-in-the-day stuff, there’s plenty going on. Dan Electro’s is branching out somewhat tonight with their “Grow’rs of Show’rs” show (and no, I have no idea what that means), which includes awesome Deer Park garage-indie-rock trio {The Gold Sounds}, rap/rock gang Screwtape, and the excellent {Jody Seabody and the Whirls}, among others.

Heading southwards (kinda) from there, there’s also an intriguing lineup over at Super Happy Fun Land, with a slew of electronics-destroying acts from here & elsewhere, including newcomers {The Illegal Wiretaps} — who make me think in a very cool way of Parts & Labor — and Sinkhole Texas label-dwellers {The Dee Use}. There’s also the moody, punkish {Only Beast} and murky Austinites Black Cock, who close out the night.

Fitz has a night of funky, bumping indie-dance-pop tonight, with actually-French Yelle, the French-named French Horn Rebellion, and local boys {Glasnost} all playing on one or the other of the floors. And hey, here’s a taste of FHB:

What else, what else… Cool indie-rock dudes {Tax the Wolf} are at The Mink, and The Continental Club has a good one tonight, too, with {Runaway Sun}, Mason Lankford & The Folk Family Revival, and, best of all for me at the moment, {Rivers} — I downloaded their recent Mind Your Mind album and have been enjoying the hell out of it the past several days.

I know I’ve missed some, sorry, but I’ve gotta run. Anyway, here’s the full list:
