Yr. Weekend, Pt. 2: The Small Sounds + Grady + Record Store Day + Born Liars + Darwin’s Finches + Mix Master Mike + More

Coming up on Saturday, April 16th, and I’m attempting to get at least a little bit of a jump on things, for once. And hell, if anything, there’s more cool stuff going on tomorrow than there was today.

At the top of my list is the long-awaited return of {The Small Sounds}, who are one of the coolest roots-rock bands in town; I seriously love these guys, honest, and am eagerly awaiting their second full-length (which is coming…soon? maybe?). I dunno Trey Brown & Mission Dorado, I’m afraid, but heck, this show over at Fitzgerald’s is worth it for the openers alone.

And hey, while you’re up there, creep on downstairs to check out jazzy/proggy instro-metal dudes {Cavernous}, who’re playing with Austin metallers Eagle Claw & TeXXXas, and who are surprisingly cool. Seriously — just sit back and watch their drummer go.

Then there’s one that kinda-sorta crept up on me — it turns out Austin-dwelling hellbilly metal band Grady will be up at The Continental Club, and that’s bound to be pretty awesome. Grady’s criminally-underrated Y.U. So Shady? practically lived in my car for a long, long time, and just thinking about it makes me want to put it back in right damn now.

Here’s a track, just to give you an idea of what these folks are like:

Oh, and the show’s apparently a birthday party for somebody named Speed Dodson; no clue who that is, but head on over to Midtown and help the guy celebrate…

Of course, tomorrow’s also Record Store Day, the day when all music fans everywhere hit their local, indie-owned music stores for all sorts of events and giveaways and whatnot. Check out the handy rundown of all RSD stuff going on at Do713.com; the highlight for me, at least, is the afternoon show at Cactus Music.

Cool indie-pop kids {The Wild Moccasins}, country-folk crooner {Robert Ellis}, indie-rock/country crew {Buxton} (who I’d feared were toast, actually), and {The Energy} (who will also be having their album release that same day at Cactus). All free, obviously, and early birds will walk away with all kinds of record label-provided swag, to boot.

In terms of other free stuff, there’s the latest(?) concert in the Skate & Rock Concert Series over at the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark. Awesomely raw, face-punching garage-punks {Born Liars} are headlining, and I really need to check out lineup-mates {Talk Sick Brats} & {Disfrutalo}, too…

Let’s see, what else…oh, there’s a very cool bunch of bands playing at Super Happy Fun Land. It’s a split-EP release show for Darwin’s Finches & {The Escatones}, so those two bands — both of which are pretty damn good, from what I’ve heard — along with Jody Seabody and the Whirls, who I like quite a bit.

Supremely talented DJ Mix Master Mike is making a double appearance in H-town tonight; he’s opening for Lil’ Wayne at Toyota Center, and then he and fellow opener Travis Barker are supposedly heading over to Rich’s for a second set. Check ’em out at one or the other…

Oh, and finally, ex-Houstonian singer/songwriter {Arthur Yoria} will be back in the area tonight, down at Chelsea Wine Bar in El Lago. If you’re down on the south side of the Houston metroplex, head on over there.
