Yr. Weekend, Pt. 3: Girls Rock Camp Final Showcase, Tonight! (+ A Few More)

I can pretty much guarantee you won’t know any of the bands playing this show, but I think it’s going to be pretty awesome, even still. In case you hadn’t been paying attention at all to things going on in Houston related to music, the first-ever Houston installment of the Girls Rock Camp, {Girls Rock Camp Houston}, just finished up on Friday, August 13th (it started on August 9th, I believe), and tonight at Walter’s is the campers’ official showcase.

There’ll be six bands playing, I’m told, all made up of girls who attended this year’s camp, and all rocking their hearts out — possibly for the first time ever, in some cases. So like I said, you won’t have ever heard of any of ’em before, it’s true, but they’re bound to be pretty badass & are well deserving of your support.

I’ll admit that this one’s very close to my heart, it’s true, seeing as I’ve got a six-year-old daughter who loves to beat on Daddy’s old guitars and writes her own songs about balloons & such. Even if you don’t have kids, though, I think the whole Girls Rock Camp thing is invaluable to the future in general — there’s no better cause than empowering kids and showing them that they can do things they never thought were possible.

This is an early-starting show, fyi, with the doors at Walter’s opening at 4PM and the first band blowing up the stage at 5PM. Which means, obviously, that it’s early enough for you to bring your daughter (or son, whichever) out, too, so they can see what kids their own age can do with instruments and a mic. And the measly $5 is pretty damn cheap for what you get, if you ask me.

Here’s hoping the GRCH continues on for many years to come; I’m hoping my own little rocker girl will be able to attend, one of these days…

Oh, and there are some other decent-sounding shows going on tonight besides this one, too. Here goes:

Runners-Up:
Corinne Bailey Rae @ House of Blues
Gorilla Productions Battle of the Bands, featuring Black Orchid Ritual, Good Timing, The Nephilim Terror, 11:11, Avid Fixation, Tangent, Echo of the World, & This One’s For Tara @ Fitzgerald’s
Off The Wall Festival, featuring Yaktronix, The Annoysters, Phillip Andrew Rivera, White Gimp Mask, Wu Fru De Lu, Martyr Of Sores, Lotus Bazooka, Muzak John, & Rusted Shut @ Super Happy Fun Land
