Hot-Damn Thursday: Springfield Riots + The Manichean/B L A C K I E on the Roof + Heart + ARTcetera + More [8/27/2009 05:33:00 PM]:
Sometimes The Weekend arrives early, folks, and tonight, Thurs., August 27th, is one of those days. There aren't that many shows going on this evening, compared to your average Saturday in the city, but damn, they're nearly all freaking cool:

Springfield Riots/Loxsly/Dan from Glasnost @ Boondocks
I suck, suck, suck. I swore to myself that I would finally have the Springfield Riots' EP of excellent, gentle, warbly/aquatic psych-pop reviewed & all that stuff by tonight, but alas, I blew it yet again. What can I say? The Day Job, The Wife, and The Midget all beckon, and I must respond. (Okay, yeah, and The DVR, too -- I'm weak, weak, I tell you!) Even without my quasi-official stamp of approval, this is going to be a great, great show -- the Riots play some awesome tunes, the kind I keep thinking got sent to me by some obscure indie-pop label that's big in Europe or something. If these guys can break out of town just a little bit, they've got a bright future...

The Manichean/ B L A C K I E/ Come See My Dead Person @ Khon's Bar (rooftop show; $7, 8PM)
How can this not be cool? Cool-ass, pseudo-psychedelic rock (The Manichean), bone-crushing hip-hop (B L A C K I E), and, um, I have no idea what Come See My Dead Person are like, but I hear they're good...and it's all up on the freaking roof, yo. No clue what Khon's is like, but my last rooftop show was many, many years ago at Notsuoh, and it was freaking beautiful.

Heart @ Arena Theatre
Woo, Heart! I can't help it, I swear; this band utterly ruled my life from 8th Grade to 10th Grade or so, right around when Bad Animals came out. It was literally the soundtrack to my first-ever teenage heartbreak, and that's a pretty gigantic milestone in life, I'd say.

ARTcetera Live Art Benefit, featuring Arthur Yoria & a ton of artists @ Artista (800 Bagby; 6:30PM)
Not entirely sure what this is a benefit for, but it's a benefit involving local artists and with pop singer/songwriter god Arthur Yoria providing the music, so there's really no downside to it.

American Sharks/Stiletto Chrome/Mills @ Walter's on Washington
Damn -- I keep meaning to see the raw, garage-y American Sharks (at least one of whom the astute may recognize from '70s retro-stompers Roky Moon & Bolt), but the fates keep conspiring against me. Get on down to Walter's before the place gets so torn-up it's a health hazard.

Ian McLagan @ McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Jody Seabody & the Whirls (tour kickoff)/Magic Marmalade/Cavernous @ The Mink
Miss Leslie & Her Juke-Jointers @ Blanco's
