Tonight: Linus Pauling Quartet & Hearts of Animals Face Off! [4/27/2009 04:46:00 PM]:
It's a full-on, no-holds-barred psychedelic throwdown tonight at Boondocks, folks...

In one corner, lay-dees and gents, we have the booze-/pot-fueled fury of the Linus Pauling Quartet, all 500-something pounds (okay, I'm estimating, here) of unhinged stoner-rock geetars, stomping proto-punk rhythms, and sung/howled lyrics about mighty barbarian warriors, alien abductions, and gettin' down. They're loose and raw and heavy, capable of snapping your spine (hell, of crushing your crappy little car, for that matter) without breaking a sweat, using only their sheer sonic power. And we can't forget their killer signature move, guitarist/singer Ramon's surprise-attack Spider Monkey Death Pounce, for which many a foe has come to the ring unprepared. The combination makes them nigh-unstoppable...unless, of course, their opponent sabotages things by buying 'em drinks for several hours before they hit the stage.

Aaaaaaaand in the other corner, coming in at the weight of, um, we're guessing a handful of fuzzy kittens, we have the small-but-deadly, enigmatically-named Hearts of Animals! HOA may not look like a threat, but Mlee Suprean deftly uses her beautifully sweet, nearly angelic voice, understated guitars, and drumbeat-producing laptop like a ninja in a Whirling Crane Trance, dealing out trippy, strange, yet still somehow captivating songs about fortune-telling, love, and God only knows what else to enemies on all sides of the stage. She confuses her opponents by weaving a hazy cloud of My Bloody Valentine-ish noise, then strikes from behind with her jagged, oily-rainbow-hued No Wave blade when they least expect it. (I feel compelled to note, btw, that I have yet to hear her latest full-length, Cave Lights -- I only picked it up a few days ago & haven't had a chance to put it in the player yet...)

Who will win? Who will emerge, bloodied yet triumphant, from the Cage of Death? With two formidable adversaries like these, there's no way to tell, but either way, it'll be quite the spectacle. Throw in the fact that it's Young Mammal Carlos Sanchez's birthday party, as well, and we're talking an unparalleled evening of party-down psych-noise savagery. And all you fans out there are in luck, because tonight's show is free, free, free! Beat that, Pay-Per-View...
