FPH Westheimer Block Party, Coming Up Saturday (UPDATED!) [3/25/2009 11:33:00 PM]:
UPDATE: After long and careful consideration, I've added my own little recommendations to the graphic over there on the right (click it for the larger, easier-to-read version, btw). Bands/musicians with a red star next to 'em are folks I'm going to frantically attempt to see, either because I know they're badass (i.e., The Western Civilization, Buxton, or the Linus Pauling Quartet) or because I've heard things by them recently that I've really, really liked but haven't ever seen 'em live (American Fangs, thelastplaceyoulook, & Phillip Foshée, for three). Folks with a purple-ish star next to 'em, on the other hand, are bands/musicians I've either seen before and like but am not totally desperate to catch this time out or about whom I've heard good things but don't know much first-hand. I'm going to try to fit the purple-starred crew in as I can.

Obviously, this is totally subjective, so take all that for whatever it's worth. And if I didn't put a star next to a band, that doesn't mean I think they (or you, depending on who's reading this) suck, but that I either don't know much about 'em or, more likely, like 'em okay but don't feel the need to cram them in to this marathon band-watching/-hearing session. I mean, seriously, take a look at the schedule -- I'm hard-pressed to find a band on there I'd avoid seeing, if given the chance and an infinite amount of time in my day. I'm going to have to clone myself as it is...

ORIGINAL (AND STILL HIGHLY VALID) POST: Damn, I've been looking forward to this one. I may be imagining things, but it sure seems like Omar & co. over at Free Press Houston manage to make each one of their Westheimer Block Party deals bigger, better, & more packed with awesome bands than the last. No mean feat, there.

Relevant details are on the big-ass flyer posted/linked here, but just in case: this Saturday, March 28th, 11AM-midnight or so, free 'til 8PM, after which a wristband gets you in ($20, I think?); there are 100+ bands playing at various stages throughout the day, all centered around the intersection of Westheimer & Taft up in Montrose. And the bands are, just about without exception, pretty freakin' great. I'm honestly having a damned hard time deciding where to go & who to see/hear...
